A boat trip is a must-do for visitors to Amsterdam. And the Amstel River is at the heart of any intinerary. But choose a sunny day or clear evening. We managed neither and peered at this waterworld through a storm.

The most important water source for the main channels of Amsterdam. It is used as a part of cruises. It forms the backround for the water network.

Take a walk around the Amstel area canal or take a canal boat ride. When busy, lots of boats and tourists, but that's what everyone's here for - touring this beautiful city and its canals.

Large river into the canals, we found it had so much history explained by our guide, just sit back and enjoy the scenery and the architecture of the different buildings, houses.

Not really a canal but the big river into Amsterdam, the traditional route of the trading ships, not full of tourist boats, but on the borders, the best of the city.

This is the main river in Amsterdam and is very beautiful. Other canals get the water from this river. We did a boat ride which was excellent.

This is similar to all the canals but a bit wider. Way too many tour boats full of tourists. Nothing different to see.

Very nice for boat trips, even possible to swim (not recommended without boat). Water is champagne colored.

Take the time to stroll the river - there is a sidewalk throughout the city and multiple beautiful views of the cityscape

Amsterdam is named after this river (Amstel Dam) and it is its main river that provide the canals with water. Very nice to have a walk there and enjoy the architecture. I walked from Rembrandt Square to Watersplein to enjoy the view,
