We walked along this canal one morning on our way to the central station. It is lined with many beautiful buildings. One that stood out for us was the beautifully decorated mid 19th century building that is the headquarters of Levensverzekering Noord-Braband, an insurance company.

Singel is one of the canals in the canal ring surrounding the old city of Amsterdam. It is the ring closest to Dam Square and runs parallel to the other canals.

It's a really nice area to walk around and take in the beautiful buildings and water features.

I would advise walking on the pavement or against the flow of traffic as you could be running into bicycles, cars and lorries so watch your step!

Singel Canal is one part of Amsterdam's canal ring. It also happened to be the canal where our hotel was which was great as it's quite central to lots of tourist sites.

Singel is a canal lined with wonderful 4 and 5 storey buildings which are typical of Amsterdam. Lovely to look at. Take the time to stroll along the canal bank - watch out for bikes - to admire the buildings, the canal itself and some of the boats floating past.

Also look out for various small shops and eating places.

Among so many canals in Amsterdam, Singel is perhaps the most picturesque and definitely the most lively. At the bustling heart of the Dutch capital, it is full of souvenir shops and restaurants. A stroll along the waterfront is particularly impressive. Definitely spend some time to explore the area.

One of the many canals surrounding Amsterdam. Nice to walk along especially in the summer. We came in late July with nice weather. You get some good views up the canal, and there are some nice buildings dotted along the canal.

Singel is one of the many canals that make up the Amsterdam Canal Rings and one with many houseboats, some of which if sitting on dry land could easily be mistaken for actual houses. The whole area and the bridges over the Singel is very picturesque and well worth visiting.

There are four canals that form the UNESCO World Heritage Grachtengordel (Canal Ring) of Amsterdam. These include the Singel, the inner most canal as well as the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and the outer most Prinsengracht.

In the distant past, the Singel was a moat that surrounded Amsterdam until the 16th century when the city outgrew Singel.

These days, the Singel is a curved canal in central Amsterdam, it is a nice waterway to walk and is lined with 17th-century buildings, cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. You can take boat rides along the Singel and take traditional Amsterdam canal photos from the small bridges which cross the canal.

I enjoy walking along the Singel as well as other Canal Ring waterways. These are unique parts of Amsterdam that contribute to the charm and appeal of the city.

PROS
* Scenic and beautiful
* Classic picture perfect postcard views of Amsterdam
* Relaxing and soothing

CONS
* Pay to take a canal cruise and get on the water

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... as part of my plan to see and do as much as I could. I was happy to cruise on this with Flagship Amsterdam (very highly recommended) and to walk along it too.

WOULD I VISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN?
Sure

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Walking is free; the Flagship Amsterdam canals cruise was certainly worth it

ADVICES
Do it

Four friends, all female and all mature age, we thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay on the Singel Canel in a houseboat. It was such a unique experience, so much better than staying in a Hotel where we would be in 2 twin rooms, and not all altogether. We were close to everything we needed, and Central Station was about 8 to 10min max walk. Our boat was actually a stationery old ship, not a flat bottomed house boat, so it had lots of character. It was fun being on the water with all the boat traffic passing by.
