Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. - Lesley CSan Diego, California85 contributionsGreat Beer!Unfortunately we came during their Oktoberfest celebration so the places was packed and only three beers were available to try. But the next day we visited their Voldenpark location and the the staff and beers were on point. Love trying craft beer in other countries!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 20, 2023
- wanderer_scotlandWest Kilbride, United Kingdom1,418 contributionsGreat place for a beerWas in Amsterdam for a football match between Netherlands and Scotland, and having visited Amsterdam before, was wanting to get away from the central side of the city, and see what more it can offer. Had just been for a meal near by, and the "windmill brewery" had really taken my fancy, as I could see from across the road that for a Thursday night it was packed! Went in for a couple of beers, and was really good and a excellent alternative to the regular beers that the Netherlands has to offer.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten March 25, 2024
- Eduardo PiresPorto, Portugal34 contributionsGood Place.I checked this place on a nice sunny afternoon. Some different selection of beers, followed by some other finger food options, nice terrace with a very good vibe made the full package. The only reason I didn't rank it higher was because of the staff. At least the person who took all my different orders was really single word answering and with no sympathy at all. In a place where you usually have to ask several different questions about beer and stuff, didn't really make me want further explore the options.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 22, 2024
- BendigoJess198141 contributionsA beer beside the only windmill in the city - what’s not to like! The only windmill in the city makes it a destination beer to say the least. Easy access by public transport as well as walking from the centre. The beer paddle was a great way to experience the beer (I had the classic one) and then you have plenty more to choose from if you want to settle in. A great range of beer snacks (we had the bitterballen with mustard). We went on a weekday so didn’t do the brewery tour - but that’s ok. Not much there if you don’t like beer thoughVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten July 11, 2024
- hwar52@cox.netGainesville, Florida72 contributionsRefresh and rechargeAfter spending time walking the street markets of De Pijp or Dapperstraad or going through the Maritime Museum, take an afternoon break here. Plenty of shade and breeze along with a couple of pints of craft beer restores the soul. Flights are available if you want to explore more flavors as you recharge.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 3, 2024
- sarahlu84Leeds, United Kingdom502 contributionsGreat beer and friendly vibesVisited this place on a recent trip to Amsterdam and had a great afternoon. Easy tram ride from the centre of Amsterdam. It was a really hot day and was packed and a great atmosphere. My husband and I shared two of the beer flights plus some tasty bitterballen. Got chatting to friendly Dutch people sat around us. All in all a great afternoon. Bought myself a beer glass in a nice box for just 5 Euros to take home, which was a lovely souvenir. Highly recommended.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 30, 2024
- Lucia B3 contributionsThe best beer and biterballen we hadWe have been there twice and the first time we have opted out for beer samples tasting. The second time when we went there, we didn't know what was the name of the beer we had tasted the first time. When we tried to describe it, the bartender figured out what we would like to drink, and gave us to taste a sample before ordering. I recommend this place to everyone who wants to relax and enjoy the atmosphere while having a good beer and a tasty snack.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2024

The beer is great and the place is nice, but the staff are not. One member of staff was extremely rude to me. He served someone before me who was there after me at the merch stand, I said I was first and he said no he wouldnt serve me next and went on to insult me! Ive never experienced such terrible customer service. I love craft beer and places like this, but I would not recommend it with such a horrible member of staff. Shame.

The brewery is in a lovely spot beneath the windmill, which is a great start. Then the beer is fresh and tasty. Samplers are a good way to go to see which you will like best. Food menu is limited but adequate. A great vibe with locals, young people and tourists all very "hoppy!"

I got there in the middle of the afternoon so there were not a lot of people there yet. This gave me some time to talk with several of the employees. They were very knowledgeable, very helpful and friendly. The beer select was extensive and there were some good sausage and cheese boards available.

We had been recommended this place loads for our recent trip to Amsterdam! As beer lovers, we walked an hour to visit.
The windmill part is cute, but the actual taproom was on the side of the windmill. The service wasn’t too welcoming, we asked for recommendations but we’re not given them. The first beer we asked for wasn’t given available on tap.
We stayed for a while trying almost every beer they had, some were okay, some weren’t great.
The place fills up quite quickly with children to older men.
The vibe is okay but we didn’t feel too welcomed as a whole.

Was looking forward to my visit after such great beer and a great time on my last trip to Amsterdam and this place. However, despite my best efforts to enjoy a beer without too much risk, I was told to move up, to allow a groups of 4 to sit right next to me. I was already sat outside away from the crowds as it was. This spoiled my beer and I left immediately. Very disappointed and a massive waste of time making the visit. I should have just bought a bottle from the supermarkets as it would have been a dambed site safer.
Shame on you guys. You must properly enforce this, not just appear to be doing so.
Very disappointed indeed. As a brewer myself, I was really looking forward to my visit. I genuinely wish I had spent the time doing something else. Everywhere else I have visited has taken covid measures seriously since I have been here. Apparently not you guys.

This is a good one! Make sure you stop by if you like the pub/brewery vibe. We went there at around 5pm and it was already completely packed. As you would expect, lots of noise and laughter, but didn’t see anyone getting too drunk or causing trouble. The small food snacks of local stuff were just brilliant, and not expensive. Loved it!

Bar had a great atmosphere, it does get busy into the evening but we managed to get a table. We started with a beer flight then just drank the ‘easy lager’ for the next few drinks. Really reasonably priced too. Would definitely recommend. And nice that you get to see the windmill next door while you’re there.

After spending the morning being tourists and heading into the afternoon it seemed to be the right time to take a dive into Amsterdam’s non-Heineken/Amstel/Grolsch brewery scene. Using our transit passes we hopped on the number 24 Tram to quench our thirst at Brouwerij 't IJ, located in a former bath house named Funen, next to the De Gooyer windmill (the tallest wooden mill in the Netherlands at 87.3 feet high. It is registered as a National Monument).
The brewery was founded by Kaspar Peterson, a former musician, in 1985 and was one of several small breweries that opened in cities around the Netherlands in response to consumers' dissatisfaction with beer brewed by the larger companies. They brew twelve standard beers and three seasonal beers, besides limited-edition beers. We ordered one apiece and settled into a picnic type table in a side room and watched those around us drinking and consuming what appeared to be good looking food. We enjoyed our beers and promised ourselves we'd be back for more later in our stay.

Ed, I know you posted this a few years ago - but can you recall what tram you took to get there, and where to catch it ?
I am flying out in July for two nights elsewhere before reaching Amsterdam on Sunday - before flying back to the UK on Monday.
This brewery looks worth a visit on an hopefully sunny Sunday evening.
Have you any idea what Amsterdam was like in general on a Sunday - it doesn't have to be mad, in fact its good if its not as the first two nights will be big drinking nights, but it would still be nice if the bars are open and have a decent atmosphere.
Thanks
Andy

Hi, just wondering how we get ourselves booked on to the English speaking tour please- any specific time we need to get there in order to do so?
Many thanks
Written April 26, 2019
The tour guides all speak English but they generally only take 20 people maximum so i would definitely suggest booking

Do you have good wifi at the bar? I am looking to come have a few beers and watch my home countries - finland's - basketball match on my phone (because I'm guessing you don't show finnish YLE channel in the bar tv :)
Written February 22, 2019
Hi Antti H, there is no TV in this bar I'm afraid. There is free wifi but we only used it for texting. I'm not sure how strong a signal you'll need to stream a match.

Is there any way we can take home beer as a souvenir? I have relatives at home that would love to try the beer but will not be accompanying me on my trip.

Most of the negative reviews were about the service not the beer. Are you taking this seriously?
Written May 30, 2018
And well, no it's not self-service! Read my review. it's the guy serving the beer who was impolite and aggressed me. The question is for the brewery owners/management
