The area
Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

I saw this in 1989 and again in June 2022. I saw it this time on a canal cruise. The tower was completed in 1638 and is the highest church tower in Amsterdam. It is 283 feet and is crooked.

This is the clock tower that is part of Westerkerk. It serves as a landmark as you walk around the Jordaan district. It shows up in the background of many of our canal photos.

The Westertoren is the tower on the Westerkerk. This is not far from Dam Square and really close to the Anne Frank Huis.

It has some really beautiful architecture and can be admired both near and far.

Due to restoration work the tower can not be climbed for the next couple of years.

Still to walk around the area is well worth it, especially if you take some distance from the tower. For instance go to the other side of the canal (Prinsengracht) and walk through the Jordaan neighborhood. From Eerste Leliedwarsstraat you get superb views of the tower.

Completed in 1638 the 87m high Renaissance style tower is the highest church tower in Amsterdam. Note the exuberant decorations, quite unique for a Protestant churchtower.

We were unable to view the inside but this tower is very beautiful and right off the river. It's close to the Anne Frank memorial and worth a stop!

Although the main church building itself wasn't really to my liking, the clock tower is pretty impressive towering over the canal and the Anne Frank house next door.

Westertoren has a beautiful tower and is located along the Prinsengracht Canal. It is next to the Anne Frank house and near the statue of Anne Frank. It is an impressive building.

A landmark structure along Prinsengracht is Westertoren, the 85 metre all tower that forms part of Westerkerk (West Church).

This is a beautiful tower that can be seen from quite some distance. You can also visit and tour the tower where you are afforded nice views of the area. Recommended to reserve in advance during peak summer months.

Designed by important Dutch architect Hendrick de Keyser in the early 17th-century, Westertoren is Dutch Renaissance in style. Similar to other church towers around Amsterdam, it is topped with the Imperial Crown of Austria. Views of the tower are really good from along Prinsengracht as well as certain areas within the Jordaan District.

Important sightseeing in the area includes Westerkerk, canal boat rides and Anne Frank House. Try to also find the small Anne Fank statue on the side of Westerkerk.

Being the tallest tower in Prinsengracht, it should the landmark around the area. Climbing to the top of the tower required the payment of fee and from there, you could have panoramic views over the whole city. The 16th century church was impressive and near to Ann Frank House. Recommended.
