We had a private tour with a lady called Cathy, You can't miss her she is dressed up all in authentic Dutch clothing of the period. She invited us into her own house, which was not part of the tour, for cake and ribena. But...More

There are many organised tours from Amsterdam at a cost of about RUR50 but we chose to take a service bus from Central Station at a cost of EUR5 each way! It is an easy 1 hour journey, with the terminus near to the site....More

This town is geared for tourists but still a great place to visit. Lots of gift shops but traffic and roads were good. Ate at the DeKraai pancake house and it was a great experience.

We took a half day optional tour to Volendam to see the fishing village, windmills and cheese factory. The Volendam fishing village is very scenic. Houses are lined with beautiful flowers. Very windy and cold even though it is starting summer in June. Lots of...More

This place is an ancient windmill village, every windmill produces a different product. I was here in July on a sunny day so it was the perfect weather, so hear it can get quite windy the rest of the year. Cheese factory was an absolute...More

Hi Steve. I am traveling to Amsterdam with 2 of my kids...ages 17 and 15. I am trying to find cool things to do but we are in Brussels prior to Amsterdam and just have 2 full days in Holland...and actually 2 half days. But i am avid biker. I usually bike 40-50 miles with no problem so I am not worried about the Windmill tour. I would actually prefer for it to be longer but my kids beg to differ. they do not love biking. But at least it is flat in holland. We live in Ct and it is very hilly here. I see you thought Zandaam was commercial and the best part was getting there. That would be me but is it too far? How many miles was your whole adventure? I am worried I willl be disappointed if I take a train to Zandaam and bike from there. It seems way too short that way. Can you confirm all of this for me? Thanks so much! Let me know if you have other suggestions. Thanks. Kathleen

The windmills are very close to the train station. You won't get a lot of biking directly at the Windmill site as it is small and has gravelled pathways and small bridges over water/boggy areas
