We decided we’d take a boat trip one week after the summer holidays had ended. We didn’t want to be in Giethoorn, even though that’s beautiful as well, because we were really looking forward to a quiet trip in nature. And that’s exactly what we got. We only met about four other boats/kayaks during our trip. Highly recommendable when you want to avoid the crowds.

When you're touring The Netherlands and want to have a feel of how most of the countryside would have looked some 2,000 years ago, I recommend to get off the beaten track (i.e., canals, windmills, wooden shoes, ...) and visit this National Park. A day would surely be enough to see the key points, but nowadays this region features many nice villages, restaurants and small attractions that may persuade you to stay a few days longer.

Yesterday we visited this NP for the first time. It consists of two parts: the Weerribben in the North & the Wieden. The southern part called the Wieden is managed by the Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment (Natuurmonumenten) and this is the part we visited. I recommend taking at least 2 days to explore the surrounding villages, the weerribben and the wieden (by water and by foot). We booked an excursion with Natuurmonumenten which was more than excellent. The Wieden Visitor Centre near Sint Jansklooster is a lovely little village with beautiful monumental houses and gardens, a Tea Shop and the centre itself. We booked a 3hrs boat tour and had a great & knowledgeable guide called Toos. We walked on the reedbeds and she explained how this wetland came into existence. A great story btw. We saw lot's of birds and the spoonleaf sundew (which I had never seen before) which is an insectivorous plant. We had great fun. Being the Netherlands I suggest you bring an umbrella, raincoat because there is always a chance of rain. And the boat is not covered.
We had a great day!

De Weerribben National Park originates from the peat industry in the 19th century. The peat was dug up, creating narrow canals and was laid to dry on the side of those canals. (The "ribben"). When all peat was exhausted, artificial waterways and landscape were left, which evolved in the current "De Weerribben" When you arrive at the main entrance, ample free parking space is provided. You step then directly into the visitors center with shop, cafe and offices for boat rental. Next to the visitors center is a large camping ground. De Weerribben is managed by the the Governmental Woodlands Agency (Staatsbosbeheer). The biggest attraction is renting a boat or a canoe, and explore the waterways and landscapes of "De Weerribben". A big invention is, that the boats have electrical propulsion and are virtually noiseless. We chose for taking a marked walk of 3,5 kilometer along waterways and through the woods. The walk was nice and instructive. We passed areas with bog and peat-land; (See pictures). It is really amazing that, when you step off the path, the ground feels really a bit unstable, just like rubber tiles. During the walk, the blessing of the electric propulsion of the boats on the water was well marked. However, in The Netherlands you are never alone. Part of the walk led through cultivated land, where a farmer was busy turning the hay with noisy machinery. Another part of the walk led over the public road; we had to jump for our lives when an ferocious motor cycle rider shot past and two seconds later an SUV with a driver in a hurry hogged the road. Returning to the visitors center we had a cup of coffee in the bit desultory cafe. This cafe was indeed uninviting. Notwithstanding that is was 12.30 in the afternoon, no visitors took lunch there. Summarizing, the nature is instructive, I am convinced that renting a boat and sailing the canals is OK, but it is all organized and a bit squeezed in between farming and traffic. Nice to visit, but not to go out of your way for.

Very stunning nature, not spoiled by tourists. You can sail for hours in the early morning without seeing any other boats. In the weekend Giethoorn may be a bit more busy but overall very unspoiled beautiful bit of Holland.

De Weerribben is stunning and perfect to explore by bike. We were blessed with beautiful weather.
We hired bikes and cycled from Giethoorn, through Scheerwolde, Nederland (yes, there is a place called Nederland in the Netherlands), Kalenberg, Ossenzijl, Wetering and back through Scheerwolde. The scenery is stunning. There are a few refreshment places en route however you may want to take a picnic and enjoy the peace and quiet. There is so much to see and enjoy in this beautiful part of the country. I would definitely return and explore more - possibly stay overnight in one of the pretty villages in the area.

Perfect place to be away from fireworks and new years stress. There are quite a few beautifull cottages for rent over airbnb. We were there in winter but summer must be Absolutely gorgeous.

Last weekend we went canoeing in Weerribben with a group of friends. It was an enjoyable trip through cute areas. It wasn't a very wild terrain - at least by the standard of foreigners who are used to grandeur of the Mother Nature. However, for what the Nethrlands can offer, the park was very nice. Renting a canoe or a boat is a great idea for a weekend escape!
