There are a number of city gates (points of entry) into the old town of Amerfsoort. In the old days these were the gates where you would enter the town, as the town was closed by a canal / big wall. There are very significant...More

Although very severely restored in the 19th century, the damage was very well corrected in the 1990's. Beautifull examples of medieval city fortifications, along with the neigbouring Muurhuizen they set you back to the 16th century.

At the end Northern of the beautiful, intimate Kleine Spui and Grote Spui, lies the Koppelpoort, built around 1425, but 'restored', and given its present appearance in 1886. It is unique in Europe, because it can control both traffic overland, as well across the water....More

very sweet old town worth the trip, you have a central street full of shops and a couple of nice squares which are populated with restaurants and pubs. The gate is a nice place to enter the city.

Remarkable old town wall, makes almost a complete circle. In remarkably good condition. Wall and the buildings in the old section are exceptionally well preserved and the details are beautiful.

These are actually one in the same structure...one gate for water and one for land. You will end up seeing both together anyway.

Don't get fooled by the train station or the business buidings on the outskirts of Amersfoort. If you venture into the city center, you'll discover a charming town with obvious medieval roots and historic buildings all over.

The well preserved gates are being used every day as pedestrians and cyclists whiz through them and vehicles go around them. We enjoyed the cool brick passage ways on a warm summer day.
