There is no doubt Leiden on the Rhine (old and new) is a pretty town. Easily walkable as it is not very big. If you go to Visitor Centre next to Centraal Station you can pick up a map and follow a loop self guided walking trail that takes in the Rhine, some lovely windmills, Rembrandt's birthplace and the old wealthy district of Rapenburg. Well worth a few hours and the sign boards along the way have English and Dutch to explain what you are seeing.

Leiden is a charming little town. And Rijn is the very soul of the place. I was lucky to visit on Saturday and see the bustling open market on both sides of Rhine for myself. I would also recommend taking the hour long boat ride. It costs 10 Euros per adult with a headphone and commentary in various languages, and completely orients you to the city. It is a good starting point following which one can explore the place at one's own pace.

As a local I can give you lots of tips. The first one it that the market on Saturday (from 08.00-15.00 pm) is really worth it. The market boasts a huge diversity on cheap food, flowers, drinks and other articles. It is a very big market stretched all over the Rhine on but sides.

Leiden is a town that will make you fall in love with Holland! This town is full of quaint and picturesque streets, and there is less 'hustle' than in Amsterdam. There are many plaques in English (and other languages) right by the attraction they explain. You can be your own guide in this town! The area where the pilgrims spent some time between their life in England and America is particularly interesting! It's hard to find a parking spot, although we were lucky to ind a parkade close to the centre that was quite inexpensive. If you go to an eating place, ask for 'bitterballen', they are delicious!

Treat yourself to a walk among the canals and streets of this small town. Delightful cafes, fewer tourists than Delft, great student energy, and not cluttered with souvenir stores. And if you are interested in the material culture of the past, the American Pilgrim Museum give you a chance to step inside two rooms from the late 1500s and early 1600s and feel a sense of those past times -- plus a ton of information if you're interested.

Not much to say about this one - It's pretty, yes, but the parts of the Rijn which you see in Leiden aren't more pretty than amsterdam's beautiful canals.

It is superior in one way though - the lack of huge crowds of tourists!

Fun fact: the Rhine flows through not just the Netherlands, but also France, Germany, and Switzerland! The branch of the Rhine which you see here is near to where it terminates, into the English Channel

The river itself is wonderful to sit in a cafe and admire, people watch, walk along, or boat on (when it's nice weather it's packed w/ boats, really THE thing to do). On Saturdays there is a large market all along the Rhijn, and on Wednesays a smaller market. Both are wonderful w/ fresh fruit, meat, nuts, fish, flowers, clothes etc! Great atmosphere, very gezellig. Leiden is a wonderful city, we much prefer it to Amsterdam!

Leiden is one of the beautiful cities to stroll around taking in the numerous canals. There are photo opportunities around every corner especially the windmill with free entry next to the vintage white swing bridge. A busy centre but plenty of parking and worth a n approx 3 or 4 hours stop to walk around without taking in the shops!

Loved the canals in this city especially when the sky is blue which created beautiful reflections in the river. Great to take your time strolling along the canal and take some good pics.

My ancestors (father's side) in the 17th century were ferryman at the Lek, my other ancestors worked at the brick-kilns along its boarders. My grandfather threw away tons of Gouda cheese into the Rhine at Bodegraven when it was not worth a penny, my mother swam in the Rhine over there in her childhood. I live at its boarder now and could also swim if I would like to. I don't but that is not because of the quality of the water. Apart from this it is a very nice river which runs through the old, beautiful centre of Leiden and is worth following. Inside Leiden on foot, outside on a bike or by car, downstream and upstream(. You will pass many nice villages.
