Leiden dates back to the Roman times when it was called Lugdunum Batavorum and already at the mouth of the river Rhenus ... now known as the Rhine or in Leiden the Old Rhine since the main delta is now in Rotterdam. The ancient river flows gorgeously through the old city, providing lovely views.

as wet as any other i've ever known...and it winds its way through some interesting places...then it branches and meets itself...tricky devil...it IS somewhat disrespectful of borders, having a 'i was here FIRST' chip on its fluid shoulders. can't argue with THAT! it seems boat and swimmer friendly enough and might, if you catch it in a good mood, might... One of the nicest part of the city, from which you can strongly feel how much Leiden is "dutch". Amazing canals, nice buildings and colorful ships on this amazing river, the true symbol of the city.

This is my fifth time to Holland and Leiden's Canal's and Basins are unsurpassed. Perfect for the tourist who is willing to go beyond the regular touristy trail. You are amongst the locals in a beautiful city

The Rhine and its canals make Leiden a more beautiful city. Grand old buildings line the water. We enjoyed walking along, taking photos and watching the traffic on the canals. The width of the river canals allows much boat traffic and makes it a busy place.

The Oude Rijn and the Nieuwe Rijn flow in canals through the historical city of Leiden, meeting right in its middle, creating a special scenery, in the most beautiful city of Zuid Holland Province. This city has the peculiarity not to have any market square. The market was held along these very canals as remembered by sculptures of the traders,... More

We went through Leiden in canoes so we looked at this and other parts of the city from the water (one of the best ways to explore beautiful dutch cities). While my favorite city in the Netherlands is still Haarlem I have to say that Leiden is a very beautiful and relaxed city, charming and attractive. Watching so many people... More

The Rijn flows through Leiden in a few beautiful canals. Amazing scenery, very fun to go sailing on the canals.
