About
The Markthal (English: Market Hall) is a residential and office building with a market hall, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014, by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 horeca and an underground 4-storey parking garage with a capacity of 1200+ cars. The Markthal was designed by architectural firm MVRDV. The grey nature stone building has an archwise structure like a horseshoe. The building has a glass facade on both sides, these are made up of smaller glass windows. The smaller windows are mostly squared and around 1485 millimeters wide. All of these are hung around a structure of steel cables, 34 metres high and 42 metres wide, which makes it the largest glass-window cable structure in Europe. Each facade has 26 vertical and 22 horizontal cables. The inside of the building is an 11.000 m2 artwork by Arno & Iris Coenen, named Hoorn des Overvloeds (Horn of Plenty).

    Such an interesting ceiling!
After or before you visit the Cube House Museum, it is just a rather short walk over to Markthal. It is a very unique building that is like an upside down u-shape with brightly colored murals overhead of different types of colorful fruits and vegetables as well as food items that surround you while walking around this building to visit the different types of food merchants and restaurants. Quite an assortment of various eateries to choose from and many have an outdoor seating also. Definitely worth a stop over when you are visiting Rotterdam.

An abundence of great food outlets
This is such a cool looking building from the outside, which is stuffed to the gills with food outlets on the inside. We decided on the ‘Saigon Caphe’ restaurant, mainly because you could eat in and there was plenty of space. There seemed to be few attentive waiters and so we opted to place our orders online instead. I went for the lunch special for €14.90 consisting of a (No.10) Lemongrass Chicken Curry with Rice (the best dish by far!) for my main dish and (No.22) Chicken Spring Rolls as a side. My wife had the (No.105) Grilled Chicken Salad Roll as a starter and the (No.124) Vietnamese Chicken Salad as her main dish. The total bill with drinks came to €38.60, which seemed reasonable. Although the food wasn’t particularly exciting it wasn’t too bad either in an otherwise bland uninspiring but relatively quiet environment compared to the hustle and bustle of the food court itself. The number one attraction in Rotterdam
I can only advise to come to Rotterdam to visit the Markthal, because seeing for yourself you can appreciate the architectural masterpiece inside and outside. Close to metro station and train station Blaak, but also having a gigantic three level car park in the basement, of course parking is for a hourly fee. Inside are an untold number of food stalls, shops and restaurants. The Markthal was opened in 2014, but is already the number one attraction in Rotterdam

    Lunch at Markthal
As a chef I enjoy going to the market, this is one of my favorite because of the architecture, and the variety of international shops inside to get all the spices and taste the different cuisines from around the world. It’s very unique and there is lots to see and do around the market. Next time you’re in Rotterdam check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

Now I know why the Dutch ride bikes!
Wowza! This marketplace is amazing! The wide variety of food and drinks offered in one place may be a bit overwhelming. I walked the first level front to back and side to side before I decided what I would try first; yes, there are escalators that take you to other levels, although the lowest levels are parking garages. I opted for an earl grey tea at one vendor, a creme Brule canoli at another, and a waffle topped with strawberries and cream at a third! There were savory places to eat lunch and dinner and coffee and tea places as well. To eat these high calorie options regularly - well, I'd ride a bike daily, too!

    Toilets
Visited this site and found that the public toilets were shut for some reason. There was no customer service desk to report the issue. Had to use one of the food venues instead, which charged. Apart from the toilet issue the place is worth a visit.

    Interesting market design
The building is really cool! It's both a market and a place where people live, which is pretty neat. They do a good job of taking care of the paintings of fruits and vegetables. It's a famous spot, so it's worth checking out. The market can be a bit expensive because lots of tourists go there, but that's expected. The food is okay with fair quality, so I still suggest going there. I also planned to visit the cube house and the "pencil house" nearby on the same day.

    Well worth a visit
We spent a wet afternoon walking round here. Some really nice food stands. After returning in the evening we managed to bag a table in the Korean chicken place. Please note that the interior food places close earlier than the places on the perimeter.

World cuisine in a very cool building
Lots of market stalls of the world cuisine in this very cool building. So much choice with a great atmosphere. Had dinner here, Chinese curry and bought snacks from the Macaroon stall for later which were amazing. It was a great experience and worth seeing this impressive building.

    Fun visit, great dining choices
With a visit to see the building alone, but the market is also more than worthy. The market hall offers an incredible array of savory and sweet dining choices, as well as gifts and tourism tchotchkes. The only negative: The small over priced restrooms in the lower level will have you missing other countries public bathrooms quickly though.

Markthal is a spectacular building to behold filled with overpriced artisan food outlets (many of which don't take card ) and the sides lined with big chain restaurants. Its more of a food court than a market hall, unlike the outside, huge open air market of local traders selling their wheres and home cooked delights.

Take your photos and then give it a swerve, spend your money outside / elsewhere.

Cash machines inside & pay to use toilets.

Unusual building from the outside, but quite a treat inside. Being from the UK, we found it almost like an 'indoor' version of the German Markets we see near Xmas in the likes of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Plenty choices for eating and a number of stalls selling a variety of goods.
We had lunch in here two days out of the three days we were in Rotterdam. Would certainly go back here again, the next time we visit.

Absolutely beautiful place, full of the best food from all over the world, gorgeous cheeses and little artisan shops. The rooftop bars are fabulous for people watching and the choice of food is amazing. Even the arched shaped architecture is awesome. Look up to the ceiling when you go in and you’ll be amazed some more with the beautifully painted ceiling. Definitely worth a visit when in Rotterdam.

If you stop here in this amazing city , you should go here. You can find all in all meaning about food , Even you will find fruits for all over the world.
I’ve been living in Europe for 3 years and half so far. I hadn’t eaten and found any place like that , I could find fruits from my country and some more that I hadn’t seen in all my life .
Apart from that the architecture and the way has been built this market is stunning, if you pay attention you will see flat on the top on it looking down right to the market. ✍🏾

One of the most important attractions of Rotterdam. A wonderfully created marketplace under the roof with a great amount of colors, flavors and aromas. Plenty of original food and great restaurants. The color palette blows with charm. Large underground parking on site.

If you go to Rotterdam or happen to be in Rotterdam, you should check out this place. Lots of stands where you can buy all kinds of "market" like things. Plenty of snacks, fingerfood even non food. Prices are not cheap, but I don't complain when it rains dogs and cats outside.

The architecture is beautiful and stylish and an interesting concept of a building housing people with a market below. We visited in the evenings when we wanted something light to eat. There are several options ranging from falafels, fish, burgers, pizzas, etc. Jamie Oliver's restaurant is attached on the outside and there is so, so much to choose from. We enjoyed delicious falafels there as well as freshly made poffertjies and ice-cream. There are several stalls with fresh nuts, dried fruit, sweets, etc. There is an Albert Heijn supermarket in the basement which opens till very late even after the markthal is closed. Definitely worth a visit.

This is such an interesting place, hosting an enormous multi-culturally diverse array of restaurants & vendors, some with roof top seating and all well priced. It's right next to the cube houses tp boot, what could be better?! Can highly recommend a visit here.
