This is a good place to spend some hours learning about the history of this area and how prisoners used to live. Some of the things you can see here are quite horrible if you think of how they used them back then bit it's definitely worth a visit to see what it was like back then. Quite a interesting... More

I made a short visit with two friends at the gevangenpoort. Since we are students the entrance fee was just 3,75 each, including a tour. I found this a good deal. The museum is small and has several rooms to have a look at. Perfect for if you just want to spend about a hour in a museum.

We had really looked forward to this visit, and although were advised it was not necessarily suitable for children under 8, went regardless with our 3 & 5 year olds. They wanted to know all about it, but the guided tour (only way to gain access to the jail) was only in Dutch; we had audio guides for 2 adults.... More

The museum is a bit expensive if you don't get the guided tour. We were there on a Sunday and really enjoyed the visit, we definitely recommence it ! FYI, the English guide runs only on Sundays, the rest of the time you will have the headsets following the local guide.

A must see to understand a bit of dutch history, but only possible during a guided tour. Check before when it is offered in English. Also interesting if you want to find out more of the dutch penal system during the 17th century and fun for people who like torture attractions

The history of this place is incredible! The tour guide really knew his stuff when he took the group around, and really made it interesting. It was well worth going to, there are a few rooms that aren't part of the tour, which I did move through quite fast. I didn't go to the gallery but if you go to... More

To visit the cells of the prison, you have to book a guided tour (different languages possible). We had a female guide who knew very much about the prison and told the story about the prison and The Hague extremely well. Can be a bit eerie to children as there are various instruments of torture (they recommend visitors to be... More

We visited the muesuem while in den haag. We were fortunate that their was a large majority of english speakers who had booked the tour so they kindly provided an english speaking guide to complete the tour with us which is normally in dutch( audio guides otherwise) You get to do a small bit of the muesuem by yourself and... It is an interesting activity but it has all you can expect from such an attraction: no difference with any other prison in this area. Fortunately the guide was a very cheerful lady that was capable of providing the group with history and good anecdotes that you would otherwise miss with only the audio tour.

Most countries have old dungeons and gaols, so also in The Hague. This place is quite important in dutch history as some of the high and mighty were imprisoned here and beheaded on the square next to it, opposite the parliament. The gaols are interesting, as are the different 'levels' of prison cels, from gaols for 20 persons to private... More
