Recommend to us, otherwise wouldn’t have found it. Old style bier hall, mainly locals enjoying lunch. Both had tartare, different to what we are use to....but tasty none the less. They don’t have fries, but a packet of crisps was on offer. With a large bier & Rosé the bill a very reasonable €25.00. The service was great, delivered by a wonderful happy lady.

It supposed to be the oldest bar in Brussels. They have big selection of draft and bottled beers as well as some quick bites. The ambience ans staff looks very old school, which gives this place an additional charm. The prices are reasonable, and the service is quick.

It’s much bigger than it looks from the outside. It’s very authentic and one of the very best bars I’ve visited.
Just grab yourself a table. It is busy but the tables turn over fast.
Huge selection of draft and bottled beers (other drinks too) and I love the way all the beers have their own unique glass.
A special mention to one of the team who clearly loves her job. She took time to explain the beers and make recommendations. The bar feels very friendly.
The food available is really more snack or light bite than meal options.
I’d certainly visit again.

Faro-lambic beers are hard to find, especially on draught. At Mort Subite, try this sweetened lambic from the Mort Subite brewery as well as their gueuze. The bar has a ton of character, worn wooden tables, high ceilings, artwork. It has a well used feel to it. Light snacks are served. Service was formal. This seems like a place locals go, and I had the feeling I was the only foreigner. Mort Subite is centrally located and close to the cathedral, Grande Place, and Delirium Cafe. Recommended for beer and snack.

La Mort Subite is a beautiful place, totally unpretentious, and old. This lovely old place could be lifted straight from a scene in an old french movie, with gilded mirrors and old pictures on it's high walls, wooden tables and chairs, and a smokey atmosphere. The beers are great, allthough the toilets are primitive. Service is at it's own pace, and the staff don't speak much English. An old cat seems to live near the back, and many regulars appear to spend as much time saying hello to the cat as they do to the staff.

So go for the beer, go with some friends, sit with your back to the wall, and soak in the atmosphere! This spot is definitely one of the original and best.

I felt really terrible because my mobile phone got stolen by a thief looking girl, but the restaurant didn't step up. Even pretended they don't speak English(they did speak fluent English while explaining the menu for me.), said they didn't see anyone like I described. We called the staff to do something for that thief girl's annoying me, they all saw her, but they all answered they didn't see anyone like that. They didn't show any compassion or care to it, even just a little help, very cold heart. By far the worst experience in Belgium. Their attitude just like "if you are locals, you deserve to be stolen." Yuck

on my second time in brussels i had to try a beer here now.

most of the people here were tourists, the atmosphere was nice, the service was friendly. about the beer, well i expected to see a bigger diversity. i drank one of their special beers, i think the beer of the month. was very good and tasty but as i said very expensive even for a bar in brussels:(

i'm not sure i'll come back again

I love this bar in the center of Brussels. It has very authentic products and authentic service. Both are a bit rough (the Geuze sur lie is somewhat sour, a real drink of a century ago), and the personnel is a little rough as well, but that is as it should be in authentic Brussels place.

Go there and have and experience. Forget the tourist places! Have fun!

Beautiful decor in this little bar, apparently unchanged since the 1920's. We went in on a Sunday afternoon and it was a little busy so service was a little slow but as you'd expect really. The prices are about €1-1.50 more expensive than most bars in Brussels for beers, and there wasn't a massive choice but decent enough. We went for the Morte Subite Faro and the Wit beer, both of which were absolutely delicious. The only really downside was our waitress who wasn't particularly friendly and actually sighed at me when I tried to pay our bill with coins. A little customer service would have been nice.

All in all a pretty tourist trap bar, nice enough to go for 1 drink but too expensive and not enough choice for the more serious Belgian beer enthusiast.
