Beautiful to see! With bars/restaurants to eat and drink Belgian beer, ice cream and you can admire the beauty, Leuven is definitely a city worth putting on your day trip itinerary. And there is a visit to the Stella Artois factory on Saturdays. Lots of delicious fries, waffles and Belgian chocolate!

A long weekend in Leuven.
In hotel Sherperd with parking and near the center.
Nice downtown with beautiful buildings, and lots of restaurants.
Also done with Guided bike tour through Leuven, for bike tour no fine bikes. (Baja bikes), also done bike ride in Berlin and Maastricht, much better bikes. Also from Baja bikes.

Leuven was a nice break from the busy tourist places like Bruges etc. it feels more local. Less
Tourists. It’s more of a place to wonder around rather than see
Individual attractions. We only visited because we were staying right next to midi station in Brussels.
So if it’s easy for you to access go ahead. You will want to spend around 2-3 hours here just wondering around. The train station is 15 minutes walk from the main town centre.

Very large market square. Very busy, but with a nice view of the beautiful / magnificent town hall. Nice terraces and cafes around it. Cozy when the sun shines with a nice fresh drink.

Let's start positive: THE great attraction is the townhall. No doubt about it: if you visit Leuven you should go see it. The other buildings around the square are also beautiful and the only traffic allowed are buses and taxis. Some acceptable restaurants and cafés on both sides and for "spiritual" food you can visit the church (Sint-Pieterskerk).

However: right next to this place, you will find another square (previously called Fochplein): the De Somerplein. It has been transformed into 1 big slab of concrete with "modernistic" bus stops (no arguing about taste - I just think they are ugly).

So when looking around on the "Grote Markt" you find yourself surrounded by Gothic age buildings with a view on this complete incompatible "other time place style ..."

This very large square would take days to explore every shop and to dine at each restaurant, sample the many stores, from troutist to very high end, theater, classical, the structures themselves are works of art. I know that there is much more in the city, but for just walking and enjoying yourself for 3-4 days go no further. Just a short look into the numerous hotels, your next time stay here moment, hours pass quickly.

This area is considered as old town of Leuven, surrounded by amazing Town Hall and St Peter Cathedral. A lot of old style buildings and restaurants. Nothing very special, as it is just a square area with old buildings converted to restaurants.

I did not expect to see here a beautiful and very impressive building. I was shocked. I like this city and enjoyed walking there.

Wow, what a lovely bustling area. Was beautiful at night time. Plenty of cafes and bars in the surrounding area.

Leuven is well worth a visit, it is perhaps not the best known of the historic Belgian cities but it is easy to reach by train from Brussels and has some delightful buildings and a nice pedestrian shopping centre as well as this magnificent square - also do not miss the Beguinage and the Botanic garden. Though the weather was poor when we visited we really enjoyed our day trip.
