Windmills have graced Bruges' ramparts ever since the construction of the outer city wall at the end of the 13th century. Today four specimens are left on Kruisvest. Sint-Janshuis Mill - anno 1770- is still in its original spot and still grinding grain just like its neighbour Koelewei Mill. The Sint-Janshuismolen is the only mill you can visit. OPEN: 01/04-30/09

The mile stroll out to the windmills is a lovely walk and lets you see the more "modern" residential section of the city. The climb up into the St. Janshuis Mill is nerve-wracking (actually, climbing down is worse!) but it's interesting to see the old mill's working and it's a great view.

There are four mills on Kruisvest. Only one, Sint-Janshuis built in 1770 is still grinding flour and is the only one open to visitors. Entry is 3 euros per adult.

On the edge of the cit of Bruge share four wonderfully preserved post mills. One is accessible for further inspection. It dates from 1770 and the wooden machinery is in excellent order. Quite a lot larger than most English postmills it is quite a steep climb up the ladder into the buck but well worth it great views. 3euros per... More

It's a pleasant 20min stroll from the city centre to the windmills. We only saw two of the four windmills before deciding that we'd seen enough. Unfortunately we weren't able to go inside them when we visited. They're situated by the canal and it's not too touristy so worth a visit if you want to avoid the crowds. However there... More

It's worth getting away from the crowds in the centre of Bruges and take a walk along the parkland strip by the canal. There are four windmills, one of which is open to the public for two euros. It's fascinating to see the crude construction of these mills that worked so well for so many years. Well worth the entry... More

Wonderful walk up and along the original real parts to the city with not one but three windmills. Good to see they still work but not on the day we went.

Those mills are situated in a really nice park just on the outskirts of the old city center which, like everything in Bruges, is not a really far walking distance away. It's a quiet place and perfect to relax with a great view of the mills which you just wouln't expect that close by. One of my favourite spots in... More

Unless there's more to do in warmer months, you just see two windmills on a hill about a 15-20 minute walk outside the town center. If you've never seen real windmills, it's worth a quick picture, otherwise skip it and enjoy the sights in Bruges.

I mean, if you have been to Netherlands it's one more mill, but the lighting and the ambiance makes these mills so unique!!!
