I always enjoy spending a bit of time at Simon Stevenplein when in Bruges. This is a quaint little square situated between Steenstraat and Oude Burg and a short distance away from Sint-Salvatorskathedraal (Holy Savior Cathedral). The square is lined with eateries, chocolate shops and rows of trees providing benches with shade.
In the centre of the square is a monument statue to 16th-century Belgian mathematician and physicist Simon Stevin, the inventor of the decimal system for fractions. This statue is the work of Belgian sculptor Eugène Simonis (1846). You will see an elegantly dressed Stevin standing on a fairly basic rectangular pedestal with Stevin's name.
Note: Simon Stevinplein is ofter then location of small fairs and holiday markets. We have visited stalls during their Christmas Markets several times in the past. It makes for a good place to do a bit of holiday shopping and for a glass of Gluhwein on cold December evenings.

We ended up on Simon Stevin Square (‘Simon Stevinplein’ in Dutch) because we wanted to have lunch at the bakery Le Pain Quotidien on the square. On a grey winter day in early December, the cobbled square hardly looked like a square at all because it was completely filled with very busy Christmas market stalls and food stands with tables and benches. Not our cup of tea. The architecture around the square, mainly dating from the 19th and the 20th century, didn’t seem very interesting. We had a quick glance at the bronze statue of Flemish mathematician Simon Stevin, who was born in Bruges in 1548. The ugly, high plinth only mentions his name. Travellers who want to know more are clearly expected to look elsewhere for information.
We found it strange that the statue of Simon Stevin and Simon Stevin Square (‘Stevinplein’ in Dutch) have been combined into one entry on Tripadvisor whereas, for instance, a branch of a Dutch chain store on the square is listed separately.

On this square, which is nice and small compared to other squares, you'll find Dominique Persoone's "Chocolate Line" shop - if you love chocolate this is a must! He makes chocolate in all kinds of forms and tastes - absolutely delicious - and different - enjoy !!

Whilst visiting Bruges, we stopped here a couple of times to eat our lunch bought in a nearby bakery. It's a good spot to rest and 'people watch'. We even chatted to other tourists from different countries who had the same idea! Plenty of benches to rest our weary legs before continuing with the sightseeing.

We have a very nice lunch in this square, very good enviorment, lots of restaurants and bars to seat and eat or drink.

Enjoyed the annual Christmas market at Simon Stevinplein again this year. Mostly the same stalls selling the same Christmas and other consumable items. The Gluhwein stand was again serving nice cups of warm Christmas wine, perfect on the cold days during the holidays.
Unfortunately, the market sets up all around the interesting monument of Simon Stevin, making it rather impossible to properly view and enjoy this monument at this time of year.
In the end, the shops and eateries which line Simon Stevinplein are more difficult to visit this time of year due to the crowded Xmas market conditions. However, the market is enjoyable, worth some of your time if visiting during Bruges during the month of December.

.. a special journey as its a small cobbled square with a good statue of someone visitors have never heard of. Most visitors don't notice it tbh.

The square is lined with shops and restaurants. We ate here twice on a three-day trip. Fun shops. Close to OLV church. You could spend a few hours here if not careful.

Perhaps mathematicians would be more interested in seeing this statue than the ordinary tourist. The square is not a must see, but something of interest along the way to the attraction I wanted to see - the church with the 8 Brussels tapestries. .
This paved cobble stone square, just off Steenstrasse, the main shopping street in Bruges, is lined with 2 parallel rows of Linden trees. The dark bronze statue of Simon Stevin, a native to Bruges, stands on a high concrete plinth in the middle of the square. Just his name appears on this plinth. Although the statue is shown with objects familiar to Stevin in his work as a mathematician and physicist, it helps to know that Stevin gained his fame with his contributions to decimal fractions. The statue is shown with clothing appropriate for stylish men of the late 1500's - early 1600's.
Around this square are several chocolate shops and restaurants. We passed by this square as we made our way to the St. Salvatorskathedraal, 1 block away on Steenstrasse. The square is about a 7 minute walk from the Markt square. Steenstraat is the main shopping street, now pedestrianized, and is lined with shops with interesting window displays from chocolates to clothing. A McDonald's outlet is close to the square and charges .50 cents to use the WC which can be applied to the purchase of a food item at McD's.
