During the city tour of Ypres in Grote Markt square we visited this beautiful structure where there is also the 'In Flanders Fields Museum' which illustrates in depth the events of the First World War. Duration of the visit approximately 1.5 hours. You can also climb the bell tower from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the centre

Mravelous to think that this magnificent building was rebuilt from scratch after Ypes had been completely razed to the ground after the first world war. A prime example of Flemish architecture

Excellent interactive museum covering 1914-1918. Lots of equipment and uniforms from WW1. Film coverage too. All very sobering and a brilliant place for children and young people to see how atrocious the war was.

Along with St. Martin's cathedral just behind it, the Cloth Hall dominates the city center of Ypres. If you visit the city, even to go to the Menin memorial to British and Commonwealth soldiers who died at the Ypres front, you really can't escape this imposing and massive building complex. And there is no reason you should want to, as it is both stunningly beautiful and well worth a visit in its own right. According to the city museum housed in one side of the Cloth Hall, the building was the largest complex in medieval Europe. Today, in addition to an exhaustive museum on the city's history, the Cloth Hall houses a very good museum on the first world war, In Flanders Field. I've reviewed that museum separately as it is one of the top sites of the city in and of itself, but the city museum is also worth a visit. Overshadowed by its Flanders Field sister, the city museum goes into loving detail about the city's fortunes from medieval times, when it was a major commercial center, to more recent periods before WWI when it became a more provincial but still important Belgian city. Among other things, the city museum explains the town's reputation as the "city of cats" and its curious and bizarre tradition of throwing cats from the belfry. Today, the tradition continues in a more humane fashion: they only throw stuffed animals but the cat occupies a place of honor in the museum's stained glass display. While the museum makes too much use of holograms, including a talking cat if I remember correctly, it was an interesting introduction to Ypres before the first world war destroyed everything.

If you see the pictures of before the destruction and after restoring, there is almost no difference. Incredible how they respect their past. It is the most beautiful and impressive building.

Although we have been there before, we still found plenty to look at. The video presentations are excellent. We went up the belfry and as it was a clear day,the views were spectacular. It also enabled us to get a good understanding of the landscape and the difficulty of crossing it under fire for the allied forces.
We spent about 3 hours looking around. We then had a bowl of soup for lunch in the cafe, which was also good.

Considering that this building was completely destroyed in WW I and was totally restored is amazing. It is a magnificent building. Spend time in the museum

Sitting in the Burger Bar we decided to visit the cloth Hall, what a place of intrigue , bombed to the floor during the war, and rebuilt wonderfully, we purchased books, had wander around and believe it or not met Welsh people, a place to visit and not to miss

The Cloth hall takes over the centre of Ypres and its magnificent, the architecture is superb, so much detail, the museum inside and the belfry are both worth visiting, take a few minutes to observe the outside.

Great collection of WW1 items. This has a bit of everything for everyone. I found the section on the found buried bunker and what was inside most interesting. The Time team programme was never like that
