This is a fascinating walk along the ramparts of Ypres with small cemeteries along the route. The walk ends up at the Menin Gate. Gives you time for thought.

The Seventeenth Century Vauban Ramparts in Ypres Belgium still stand which is an amazing feat of construction and engineering from the 17th century. Along the Var Rver if you look closely at the medieval structure you can still see the slits where arrows were fired.

I had free time in Ypres and looked at the street map and identified these fortifications. I walk around these fortifications is relaxing with may opportunities to take photographs. If you are interested in fortifications of Vauban then this is a great place to go.

Bigger history picture of Ieper and my 3rd arterillery fortification in as many weeks. Lovely walk in the shade or by the water on an otherwise hot Saturday.

The ramparts and surprisingly wide, so never seem crowded. There are a variety of places on interest indicated on the walk and several bench seats. The views are very pleasing and it is a very relaxing place to spend an hour or more.

Ramparts are reminder of a long history of Ypres but also a nice place to walk and escape from roaring town. I walked there several times from Menin Gate up to Ramparts cemetery and then either walked back to the town or crossed the bridge...More

Excellent walking round parts of Ypres older defences. Connects to the Menin Gate which makes for a superb finish combined with the last post ceremony.

Really nice walk around a good bit of old Ypres. You really get a “different” view of the city and a feel for the history of the city. You can walk it as slow as you want or even use it for a nice jogging...More

With kids these ramparts are ok but they will get bored doing the whole circuit. We parked for free in leopold III laan car park then used the walls as our route to menin gate. That was enough. Ypres itself is nice. Get an ice...More
