About
The well temple of Santa Cristina (12th cent. bc) is one of the finest examples of the elaborate religious architecture of the Nuragic era. The nuraghe structure consists of an entranceway (dromos) with steps leading to an underground, circular domed chamber (tholos), all surrounded by an enclosing wall (temenos). The walls of the stairway and underground tholos are made from finely cut ashlar blocks of alkali basalt rock. Santa Cristina can without a doubt be considered the most representative of the Sardinian well temples. In the area surrounding the temple are the remains of a village, at the front of which stands a "meeting hut" with a circular stone seat. www.pozzosantacristina.com

If there's one spot in Sardinia that has blown me away, this is it. Amazing. Quite unbelievable how people 4.000 years ago have been able to make this. The alignment to the moon. The precise placement of the stones. Cut to perfection!

What a perfect place this was to learn about the fascinating nuraghic history of Sardegna. A few steps off the autostrada and it feels like you have moved through a time tunnel to the past. This lovely pastoral setting takes you to the sacred well that is truly a mystical experience. The eliptical stairway down to the well is so intact that it seems to be a recent recent construction instead of an ancient ruin. It brought back memories of the Mayan ruins for me. Then the walk across the fields on a stone path lead me to through the intimate Christian village and from there, through the trees to the ancient settlement of Nuraghic times. The two hours I spent wandering through history touched me in a way I didn't expect. It is a truly amazing place.

The trip to the "sacred well" was so very disappointing. All we saw was a hole in the ground with water!

we have choosen to visit it according trip advisor rating, but it was nothing special. some prehistorical buildings of stone, some type of village with buildings and a well. tooks about half an hour to look around. maybe it would be more intersting with a guide. anyway, I think there are much more interesting to do in sardinia than this point of interest.

This place was , likely, a temple where the nuragic tribes gathered together during equinox and solstices to celebrate the sun and, believe it or not, a kind of mystical experience can still be felt nowadays. While visiting the holy well of Santa Cristina and its nuragic village I thought that a lot of evidences of the nuragic culture are still under the ground and I am afraid they will stay there for a long time due to a lack of funds for continuing the excavations. Nevertheless, the monument worths a visit. I also suggest to visit the Nuraghe Losa located few miles away on the northern side of this site.

It seems a wonder that this well still exists after 3000 years. The quality of the stone masonry for a 900-1100 BC well is incredible. I thought it must have been restored but no it is original. Made of basalt stone it is said to be a masterpiece. The well has also never been without water (today the water is regulated, but used to vary in height). The stairs are aligned to the spring and autumn equinoxes so that on these days the sun shines onto the water - this is said to be unique for its kind. This is a must see if you are travelling from Nuoro to Oristano. Included in the price of € 5 is a Nuragic village, with an 'elongated barn' and a nuraghe (1500-1200 BC), which is also quite interesting. There is a restaurant next to it but we did not try it.

The 5E per person admission includes the 3 sites here (sacred well, nuraghe village, christian church + village) as well as the Etnografico museum in Pauillatino. The sacred well is very unexpected and found inside keyhole shaped walls inside almond shaped walls. The well is made of almost perfect cut stone while the walls are made of rough stone - quite the contrast. The nuraghe village is nice in a pretty shady setting highlighted by one tower structure and two interesting barn structures. We just walked past the Christian church and village - pretty but the church wasn't open and is relatively new construction anyway.
The Etnografico museum in Pauillatino is housed in an interesting 'palace' type building but unfortunately was closed from 1-3pm when we got there in early November.

best preserved and one of the most important well temple in Sardinia. You can go down to the well by a flight of 24 preserved steps. At the bottom you can look up at the tower through which light enters the dark well shaft. Every 18 years the full moon shines directly through the aperture into the well. A mythical place.
