We stopped in Elvas after Vila Vicosa. Nice lunch on the square before exploring the town. Really interesting fortification rather unique to Portugal. A town well worth stopping in.

Elvas is an excellent place to visit as there are so many different sights and few tourists - despite UNESCO status. The parking at the time of our visit was free just inside the amazing earthworks around the old town. These are incredible and must...More

What a great town with plenty of options A local gin producer- sample a wide selection at the castle wall Or look at hand woven merino wool blankets or pottery then have a coffee along one of the tiled side streets

Not much to do here but it is lovely to visit. The town is beautiful but can be finished within an hour. Try to avoid on a hot day as it is very hot.

With Fort of Graça and Fort of Santa Luzia on each side, Elvas is a strategic town in ancient time. The heavy fortification of its town could attract more tourists to the area. Unfortunately, this beautiful place is just sitting quietly at the Spanish- Portuguese...More

This little walled village is definitely worth a stop during a road trip. The town is very sweet, as are the people in it. I have never seen a village inside a fortress before. I was there on a Sunday when most of it was...More

Drove from Madrid to Portugal and diverted to Elvas. Parking smack in the middle under the town square! What an amazing town! magnificently restored and yet in keeping with the history of the place....from ancient Rooms to the Templars defeating the Moors and Christian fighting...More
