Well worth a visit to remind us Brits of how long were have been allies of Portugal (since 15thC) and of the battles fought hereabouts together and lives lost. If we had not prevailed in the Peninsular Wars Europe would be a very different place now.
Great views.

This cemetary is certainly worth a visit for anyone who is interested in the Peninsular War. It is beautifully kept and a delightful place to sit quietly in the cool gardens and contemplate what happened 200 years ago on these plains.

Took a bit of finding but so glad we persevered with the climb up to find this beautiful peaceful cemetry garden .small but well kept .a lovely place to sit and contemplate .read the plaques dedicated to the officers and men who served in the peninsular war .whether history is your thing or not it is a nice place to stop for a while as you walk the town walls of Elvas .

Like another one of the views, it wasn't the easiest place to find walking around the quaint little residential lanes in the town and I nearly gave up. Very pleased I didn't and I spent more time there than I would have imagined. I love war history, but didn't know much about the Peninsular war. It is in a very tranquil setting, beautifully kept and very interesting to read the history information there and the headstones.

It took us some time to find this tiny memorial garden with fabulous views over the surrounding countryside but I'm very glad we did. I wanted to come here because of my interest as an author in the history of the peninsular war in this area. There are a few marked graves here and a number of memorials to the dead of the battles of Albuera and Badajoz. The place is very well kept and has a lovely peaceful feel to it. See it if you can.

Lasting 6 years , marching 6000 miles, 40000 dead the Peninsular War was a very significant campaign for the British Army. Here at Elvas lies a moving memorial to the men of Wellingtons Army. Well worth the walk up , the castle is very interesting. Quo Fata Vocant

This cemetery is small and more of a memorial area really, with large plaques rather than headstones. The entrance isn't that easy to find but it is worth the effort. A very peaceful spot.

A solemn reminder of the shared history between the Portuguese and the British. We have been allies for over 600 years.
