A TIME OF YEAR RATING
Sep. 2019
Took a two hour boat trip ex Bay Bulls in September. There were one or two whales about with the usual difficulty trying to photograph them. The area is more particularly known at a major nesting ground for puffins, the second largest in the world. Most of the puffins had left by this time of the year. If one were here in the early summer you would see it in its full glory.

Icebergs, whales and puffins
Jun. 2019
We took a zodiac tour of several of the islands that make up Witless Bay Ecological reserve. On June 6, 2019 we saw the first sightings of humpback whales, lots of puffins and a couple icebergs. It was an incredible experience.

The Go To Place to See Puffins!
Jun. 2019 • Couples
My wife and I visited the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve from a boat tour and was able to see thousands of Puffins,Murres, Auks, numerous gull species and a Bald Eagle. This is a must see from an up close boat tour if at all interested in seeing ocean bird life.

Sep. 2018 • Solo
A relaxing boat ride through the bay to look at local wildlife and hear about the history of the area and the important ecological work done in the area. Very knowledgable and entertaining crew . A fun experience . More wildlife earlier in the season

I've visited this reserve 3 times, and never failed to see whales and thousands of sea birds, especially puffins. It's an amazing place!

Very friendly joyful staff keep you informed and even sing enroute. You’ll see so many birds, especially Puffins, they aRe everywhere! We even saw an eagle! No whales but no one minded as we were kept busy. It was a beautiful sunny day and the ride was just over 2 hrs., we’ll worth the $. Do it!

So many birds
Jun. 2018 • Couples
We did the Obrien's Boat Tour out of Bay Bulls. It was cancelled the first day due to weather but they did give us a couple of hours notice and re-booked us for the following day. The boat was full due to a coach trip. We found it easily enough and there was plenty of parking. They have a huge gift shop with a cafe above it and we check in and joined the line to board. I would say there were pax 45 people on board plus the captain and his crew. The boat sailed out towards the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve and we went completely around both islands. It was very rough and very cold that day. We saw everything, puffins, bald eagles, Black Guillimot, Kittiwakes, Back Back Seagulls and a few more. Not just a couple of each species but hundreds of birds. Really upclose views and watching the puffins try to fly is hilarious. The guides were very knowledgeable on the birds and there habits etc and welcomed questions. We learnt a few folk songs as we travelled and on the way saw a few Minke Whales, they usually don't come out the water much but we were very lucky. Once we were back on shore we got take out hot drinks from the cafe to warm up.

Go with Ecotours! Touring the coast and the sanctuary in Zodiac beats the " big boat experience" hands down!
Aug. 2018 • Solo
I fortunate enough to be able to book a tour with Ecotours, located just being the Irish Loop Coffee shop on rt. 10.
Their tours book a small amount of people and are taken in a Zodiac, rather that a large multilevel boat.
The Zodiac was able to get closer to the birds than I ever imagined, and was able to maneuver quite close up to and around the marvelous sea stacks and caves along the coastline.

Nice little town
Aug. 2018 • Family
We came to this area and did not get a tour. I heard through the grapevine that you might see puffins in the town however no luck on this day. The beach is nice and there is a walking trail however the weather was not great when we were there.
