About
The city of Evora is world heritage not only for its monuments. Their culture, their streets, whitewashed houses, the latticed balconies, their uneven sidewalks, its Gothic doors and windows, narrow and irregular streets of the Jewish quarter, its whiteness contrasting with the blue sky, its people , traditions and cuisine, among others make Evora is one of the best preserved world heritage cities. Stroll through its elegant medieval arcades and the unpretentious streets breathe history in Romans, Arabs and medieval manor and detail framed by the picturesque. Get regional crafts, indulge in the cuisine of the area and be sure to enjoy their famous wines. With a good hotel infrastructure, with many good restaurants, with warm people and beautiful monuments, Evora awaits your visit.

In november, when the tourist busses are away, the city get's more quiet and charming. However, when you'e not a fanatic fan of churches and sacral art, the city offers less than other fascinating cities in Europe. It seems, its UNESCO title hinders vitality and investment. Empty streets, a lot of abandoned or forsaken houses, badly covered streets. More, the quality of restaurants(standard food) ans cafés (nasty plastic seats and inox tables) is quite poor and you have to search in the north of the city which is more vital. Even if some places are quite nice and our hotel near the city walls was an oasis of peace, the city has to make efforts to enhance and raise his image. Some golden altars are nor suffisant.

It should be remembered that ÉVORA is a historic city, a bit peaceful, especially on Sundays and Mondays when many shops and restaurants are closed. It is worth establishing a base in the city to take a tour of the Alentejo (Marvao/Elvas/Monsaraz). The historic center is very basic, all the attractions are close to each other and in 2 hours, at most 3 hours you can see everything peacefully. It's basically that. For those who like to taste a good wine there are several wine options.

Not being from Alentejo, you have to really like Évora to go back there... Today, I was faced with the sad reality of seeing Praça do Giraldo "close" at 8:00 pm. It's an absurd silence in a historic center where it seems like businesses have their backs turned to tourists. The streets are full of weeds (judging by their size, they have been there for a long time) to stroll around until the sun sets.

You need a minimum of 2 days, probably 3, in Évora to see all that the city has to offer. The historic centre, with its many winding streets and cobbled roads are a joy to walk when exploring the sights. Praça do Giraldo is the heart of the historic centre, and a good place to use as your centre point as the roads running off it lead to the sights and the square has the tourist information office and numerous cafés and restaurants for refreshment. A visit to Évora is highly recommended.

This goes way back to the Celtic times and is surrounded by a Roman wall. Wonderful ancient monuments, churches, other buildings and homes, including low whitewashed ones decorated with Dutch tiles. It also survived the 1755 earthquake, which many Portuguese towns did not.

We loved walking from our hotel, on the outskirts of Évora, through to the centre.
The houses are beautiful and streets still have that feeling of old!
It has a peaceful atmosphere with a colourful feel to it.
Add the historical discoveries on nearly every corner and it's just a fantastic tranquil place to visit.
We loved it and wished we could stay a few days longer.
ENJOY :)

I liked walking through the historic center, even though there are complicated cobblestone areas for people with reduced mobility. You can do it, in my case with a mobility scooter, 5 de Octubre Street, which starts from Plaza Giraldo, is a joy because it has flagstones in the central part. The town hall area, a building that is being rehabilitated, is also good. It's a bit of a look. Who does not have reduced mobility, only the discomfort of the cobblestones.
I give it 4 stars, because there are no discounts, no adaptation, everything will come....

The overwhelmingly historical place that is Evora is so impactful. Loved the center of Evora, the churches, museums and gardens. This is an amazing place. Loved see people of all ages hanging out, sipping coffee in the square.

There's lots to explore in the centre of this beautiful old town. The narrow streets are full of character, and there are many places to visit. The tourist office is located in Giraldo Square. They provide a pretty good service, so it's a good place to start your visit and to make the most of your time in Évora.

Evora was always a name that said little to me, until I had the opportunity of visiting and walking the old town, and it is amazing well worth it, no doubt the kings had a Palace here as well. Do stop and maybe stay a few days.....also a nice base for tours around the region
