Tapeçaria de Portalegre should be classified as a national treasure. It's so labour intensive and so detailed that the result is always a fabulous art piece. It is in fact on the verge of extinction due to the fact that there is almost no artisans to continue the art. The museum should exist to showcase the art and that is... More

Fabulous little museum with a collection of tapestries created in the late 20th C by the wonderful tapestry makers of Portalegre. Of top quality, they are very beautiful things, I'd love one myself if it wasn't for the fact they sell for tens of thousands of euros. I believe the company (quite separate from the museum) is suffering quite hard... More

You have to go to see these tapestries to quite appreciate how stunning they are. They are beautifully displayed (excellent curating). It is the sort of experience that makes you think to go back the next day.

I was able to visit the museum, and I could see with my eyes what we already thought, the best craftsmen in the art. Some examples of works of art of famous painters, turned into tapestries, weaving masterpiece.

. Must visit. Staff couldn't be more helpful and friendly. Stunning tapestry. We also visited while there was a classical concert going on in the basement, which made our tour even more magical. It costs 2.10 euros but you will feel as if it was worth more than that. Enjoy!

Our visit was enhanced by the English video that explained about the history behind the museum and why tapestries were so important to the area. The colours and more modern exhibitions were well worth the visit.

The museum shows the history of the founder and factory of the unique Portalegre Tapestries. It is possible to see works from diverse internacional painters being used as models for these tapestries. Also, when seeing the comparison between the Portalegre's knot and a regular one, is easy to observe the quality of the product.

The atmosphere is bucolic. The presentation about this Portuguese regional art has been "the best kept secret".
