Making Cataplana with my family was a great experience. We enjoyed shopping at the Market and learning how to cook a typical Portuguese meal. Actually, our Cataplana was better than what we had in a restaurant.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our cooking experience with Alexandra. The trip around the market was very informative and fun. Alexandra made the experience as accessible as possible for my wife (a wheelchair user), including a dedicated transfer from the market to the restaurant. The Cataplana was really tasty, something we will try again at home. Please note that you don't just get to eat the Cataplana, the lunch also included starters, dessert & drinks - great value.

Shopping for ingredients at the market was fun and informative. Learning about the special cooking pot was quite interesting. Eating the Cataplana was fun, too.

The itinerary listed shopping for ingredients in a market and cooking our own meal. Unfortunately, we really didn't buy much of anything. Except for a few veggies that our guide essentially picked, she told us everything else was already waiting for us at the restaurant. Not what we wanted or expected.
At the restaurant, we went upstairs to prepare cataplana. We chopped the ingredients and added them to the cataplana pan as directed by our guide, who was also the chef. In our opinion, the dish was too watery and lacked flavor. It also should have been served in bowls instead of plates. The fish was croaker, which is not our favorite.
If there was a "good" rating, that would have been more accurate. Our guide/chef was very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and fun, yet only 19 years old. In the future, she should have allowed us to pick out our fish and shellfish as well as our own veggies.
It was enjoyable, but left us wanting.

Wonderful experience! We had a lot of fun shopping at the market, picking out the ingredients we needed to cook the cataplana and I even helped filet the fish. At the restaurant, we learned about the dish we were cooking, it's history and how to change it up a little. Then we ate the wonderful meal after being served yummy appetizers and a nice glass of wine. Dessert was included too! Would definetly recommend, even for people who don't like to cook but do like to eat!

We spent a gorgeous day with Carolina, Doris and her team. After visiting of the local market, when I was allowed to fillet the sea bass wit the boss of the fish market, we cooked a Cataplana with Doris (chef) and after five starters (tuna pasta, olives, carrot salad, chickpea and cod fish salad, tuna ham on bruschetta) we ate it. It was delicious. After that we got a local unbaked spicy sweet desert. All supported by Monchique kind of brandy and delicious white wine. Thank you all for a beautiful day...now we are going to eat the rest of Cataplana. Yum.

We were fortunate to have chosen Tertulia for a superb introduction to the cuisine of the Algarve. The cataplana of razor clams, whelks and baby clams was superb. We also enjoyed the octopus with tomato, turnip greens and potatoes
The owner Joao Amoro was helpful, very personable and knowledgeable. Its a beautiful spot and a night that we will remember. Highly recommended.

We want to taste local food when traveling but with my gluten allergy it is not a simple task. In Tertulia they have made my day by menu explaining ingredients and way of cooking in English - not so usual in restaurants. On top of that they have brought automaticly warmed gluten free bread that was fabulous! I have had the best tuna steak ever and my dear have had delucious lamb.
Really happy-belly experience with true Portugese gourman specialities.

Margarite and Miquel were our hosts for an amazing day at the Mercado de Faro followed by a cooking class on cataplana cooking. They were informative, friendly and offered a historical tutorial on cataplana cooking. The food was absolutely delicious. The meal was plenty and complete with a starter and dessert. I would highly recommend taking advantage of their expertise. A wonderful day and a great memory.
