I visited this beach while I was shooting the video for the channel "Columbus' Travels" on the Algarve. It is ONE of the beaches most loved by surfers. It is Praia do Tonel with its frequent waves, dark sand and turquoise water. its main characteristics.
full video on the channel.

We were told by a local person about this nice small beach!!! Was the best sunset we could watch!!! Take a jacket for the evening as it gets a little bit windy.

If you are visiting the Praia do Tonel, don't forget to bring your bodyboard/surfboard with you. The ground is sandy and has not many rocks.
The little beachbar and the surf-rentals are good too...

So sad, been coming here for 10 years and always loved it. Husband surfing and I stopped for a beer. I was sat on a table in the shade because I had had enough sun. A german family couldnt find a table so I offered them mine and moved. I moved to a chair in front of their table hence my shins were in the sun. It was too hot so I asked them if I could move my chair back, nearer their table to get out of the sun. A member of staff came over and told me to move in an overly officious rude manner. I tried to explain but was basically told it wasn’t about me, the customer, but them to get to tables. I was not blocking anyone. I was upset and angry as I had only moved to help other customers and ultimately increase their revenue. I left shortly after and husband and I did not return to have lunch as we had planned. Shame on you.

Hi everybody, I found that the owner of pizza al puffo also has a surfboard rental next to the pizza al puffo! DoNT rent anything here! Poor English speaking staff, bad quality boards and wetsuits and crazy conditions when you damage a board. Somebody hit my board in the water and the outer layer of the board was cracked. So no hole or deep break in the board. I went out of the water to report the damage and the employee called the boss to inspect the damage. I understood 15 euro,s and I agreed because it's a fair price to repair this kind of damage. I know is just polishing the board with sandpaper and a a new layer. Not a long and expensive procedure. So a got a new board. I inspected the board and found a hole. I pushed around the hole and water was coming out. I told this to the employee and asked him if he could put some duct tape on the board to prevent more water coming in to the board. He told me it was not necessary. I laughed and told him it was his call. There was also a lot of wax on the bottom of the board. I wanted to get it off but the employee did not know what I was talking about. A lifeguard ( chilling next to the surf shack) told the employee to get a wax comb out of the shack. So I made the board wax free on the bottom and into the water. I had some good waves and when I returned I put the board and the wetsuit next to the shack. I went in to get my drivers license which I left there as a deposit and gave 20 euro,s to the employee as payment for the damage. He told me it was 50 euro,s for the damage. I laughed at him and I told him his boss and I agreed for 15 euro,s. Than the employee called his boss. Well, he went ballistic to me. He even didn't give me any time to speak. He is a complete nutter. First I had to laugh a little Portuguese lad running around me and yelling to me. To make a long story short I paid the 50 euro,s. Not because I felled threatened or the fact I was impressed but more that I felled sorry for the guy. This is my third time in Portugal and I only met friendly people. It's such a shame that the relaxed surf atmosphere was ruined today. Not only for me but for a lot of people to see him go nuts just because I was questioning the amount of money a had to pay for the damage. Maybe it's better for him to just make pizza,s and stop renting surfboards. Bring your own board and enjoy the waves!

Ok place to surf in December. The waves are largest around lunch, so it is best to go in the morning or afternoon if you are a beginner.

This was our second favorite beach in Portugal but a much quicker drive than arrifana. The beach is protected from wind and has nice views. We spent a few hours here and also had coffee and beers at the cafe on the beach. The parking made it seem like it would be busy but there is plenty of space for everyone.

Wonderful bar on the beach. Great for surfing and relaxing on a dandy beach. The bar does a great lunch - burgers, salads etc

Just happened to notice the sign for this beautiful beach while we were on our way to see the Fort and decided to have a look on our way back WOW!!! When it's busy parking can be a problem but well worth it because this beach is fabulous because it is so naturally unspoilt with a rustic beach bar overlooking the action on the surf.

Praia do Tonel is an awesome beach. There are some decent small summer waves. It's huge and not too crowded with a great beach-hut-bar that has some solid snacks as well as beers on tap.
