Highlight if you walk down to the lake

Beautiful Lake and best geographic monument on Sao Miguel. Don't forget your solid shoes and walk down to have amazing views, but it's not an easy hiking trail.

The island offers so much beautiful landscapes and views, but to be on the rim of a volcano is something else entirely. Stunning, Careful on the winding roads up

We drove up the volcano from the South side and over to the North side. The road twists and there are several hairpin bends so it I interesting driving. There are lots of view points with parking up both sides and at the top a much larger parking area. From this you can walk up to the masts for the... More

My husband and I drove out there thinking we were just gone take a look over the rim and then drive back. We decided that it was too beautiful to just view from the top- we had to go down. First the drive up)if coming from the south) can be pretty steep but it is manageable. My husband and I... More

In the centre of Sao Miguel island, not too far from Ponta Delgada, amazing view of the lake from the top of the crater, accessible via jeep or similar vehicle, view is just breathtaking! Don't miss the beautiful scenery and fantastic landscape everywhere you look.

First day of our trip to Azores we wanted to go there, you couldn't see anything! So much mist. A couple of days later, you again saw a cloud on the mountain. The last day it was a beautiful day, so we tried it again, and... no mist! Beautifull! What a view. So silent. There is a hiking trail which... More

It's the most natural volcano that you have on the island. No houses or cows just pristine nature. You have the option of walking down to the water level on a 20min down walk. Theres other options for hiking but guided is recommended

The “PRC-2-SMI Praia – Lagoa do Fogo” trail starts iclose to Ribeira do Praia bridge and it takes around 2 hours each way. The path goes up for 2-3 kms, until it reaches the "levadas" through a luscious and green forest, and it finishes in a volcanic landscape with green endemic plants and birds (including seagulls nesting) before reaching the lagoa.... We went straight from the airport because we checked the webcam and found it was sunny. The weather changes by the minute and this was the best tip we had for the Azores. It was beautiful but the trail looks easy down, it is a son-of-a-gun going up.
