This very historic fort is located on the harbour side, over which it held a commanding position. It is now a military museum dedicated to the Portuguese army, especially commemorating those from the Azores islands. Housed in the very large historic fort, it is well worth the visit. …

This is in a rather damp and decaying old fort near the town centre. It has a lot of really interesting exhibits laid out in a rather haphazard style it seemed to me. I learnt a lot here particularly at the section dedicated to Portugals military campaigns in Africa which was well laid out and very clear. If you come to Ponta Delagado dont miss it.…

This tour isn't for everybody, but if you like exploring 17th century forts and looking at historical exhibits of military equipment, you'll have a good time. We just happened to hit it on "Military Day" (or something like that) and so got in for free. As happened so often in the Azores, the active duty soldier we encountered at the entrance was enthusiastic and happy to explain to us (in fluent English) what we would find inside and where to start.…

This museum had a variety of military items spread throughout numerous rooms. You could climb to the outside walls and look over the bay and the city. It was a nice location close to town, there was a small fee and very few people had been there. It does need some work on the inside as some rooms were crumbling from the water seepage and the paint and plaster were breaking apart. There were a few rooms with mold growth on the walls, I am sure some of the display items are aging quickly from the humidity levels. In all, it was a nice stop, not too intellectually challenging, and seeing some of the displays reminds us of the military history of the islands.…
