This beautiful church is small, but it's worth a short visit. The priest does not understand English, and I don't understand Portuguese, so we used translation software to communicate - brilliant! Sunday mass is at 11 am.

As of Feb. 2016, Sao Jose has Sunday masses at 11:00 and 18:30. The doors seem to lock as soon as the congregation clears out, so if you want to visit the church, you can slip in right after the service finishes. Or, you can attend the very beautiful mass, complete with choir. The church is incredibly beautiful. Some details... More

Ponta Delgada has quite a collection of pretty little churches. This one is located in a square near the fort, and is only a short walk from the centre of the town (and the other churches). Unfortunately I couldn't go inside as it was closed each time I visited. Still looks good from the outside though.

Saint Joseph's is more ornate than its established cousin, Igreja Matriz, which is just short walk down to the main square and gates of Ponta Delgada. Sao Jose's ceilings are painted similar to... This Azorean church is truly ornate and allows time for peaceful reflection irrespective of religious ben beliefs. On most days it appears to be open thus would recommend visiting.

A great place to visit even if you are not a religious person. Check the inside for its beautiful decoration and history.
