In my opinion, the most gorgeous church in the island. We were surprised with its rich and intricate art, much richer and impressive than many other small churches.

It is a big church in front of a square. I love its facade although it the architecture is just typical to the islands. The main altar is golden and majestic! The side altars with all its design are also very pretty. The ceilings with its paintings are worth a look. Some side chapel also got azulejos on the walls. This is still an active and well supported church in the old city. It is just off the Campo San Francisco and dominates the square. Inside it is a beautiful scene of ornate architecture and beautiful colour scemes. More blue/white tiles tell of the history of St Joseph.

This is a another lovely very old church with a beautiful altar. It is diagonally across from the Church of Santo Cristo bordering along the square Campo de Sao Francisco.

If you are near the Campo de Sao Francisco, it's definitely worth your while to cross the street and see if this church is open. We were staying nearby, so while it was closed the first time we went, it was open the next time. The hours were posted outside, but were hard to read. It's free to enter. If you were only going to choose 1 church to visit in Ponta Delgada, I would suggest the Jesuit chapel at the Museu Carlos Machado as the wood carved altar there is spectacular. But, if like us, you enjoy going into churches when you travel, I would stop here as well as the nearby Santo Cristo church.…
