Just enjoy Beautiful, rich.. no words. In my advice a guided tour is the best way to know the building, remember that You have to do a reservation. You'll find outside boys and girls dressed withthe student's tipical clothes! Usually they sell post cards and pencils... they sid to pay their studies... often just for drinking beers!!!

Well worth the cost, wait, and extra effort to see the academic prison. Dusty, gorgeous, and fascinating. Be sure to get a ticket in advance!

Built between the years 1717 and 1728, it is one of the exponents of the Portuguese Baroque and one of the richest European libraries. It will be known as the Joanine Library in honor and memory of King João V (1707-1750), who sponsored its construction and whose portrait, by Domenico Duprà (1725), dominates the space. It is composed of three... More

It's a great library to see but they allow no pictures - not even without the flash. The library is something out of a Harry Potter movie. This review is a tough one because the rest of the other buildings are nothing special so it's really the library. Hate to say this but if you see pictures on the Internet... More

Built in the 18th century during the reign of the Portuguese King John V, it is part of the University of Coimbra General Library. It is a National Monument and has a priceless historical value being one of the main tourist attractions among the older monuments belonging to the university My memory is a little foggy this library is only... It was too bad that they don't allow photos in here because it was an amazing building filled with old books, beautiful woodwork and a fantastic ceiling. The prison downstairs is wortrh a look as well

This beautiful Baroque library was the highlight of my visit to the University - and Coimbra in general, for that matter. The shelves were richly carved and filled with rare books, and the ceilings were beautifully painted. As a book lover, a visit here was amazing! The only downside was you don't have a ton of time to explore (they... More

We gasped when we entered the library. It is really spectacular. The number of guests per hour is limited and they let groups in every 20 minutes. The visit is 10 minutes in length. Also visit the floors below.

A little advance planning its recommend it to ensure a place in a tour if you wish to know a little more. We were lucky and there was a last minute cancellation and we... More
