When passing this entrance, you feel that you enter history. The streets are different, and you understand more how a middle-age-city looked like. Quite a climb towards the university.

A Moorish stone gateway, the Arco, leads up into the Almedina from the town, but we started at the top, after visiting the university. You make your way slowly down and get lost in a maze of narrow steep lanes. At the town end there...More

This arch is your entry to a brief but steep climb nicknamed the "back breaker" that leads you to the Velha Se (Old Cathedral) and the National Museum and ultimately the University.

It's nothing special to look at & or to photograph, but it's the history attached to it that makes it reason to wander through it & remember it's purpose. Then just keep walking up past old buildings/homes/cafes, including the old cathedral until you get to...More

It is hard to find free parking sites close to Coimbra's city centre. However the parking prices are acceptable and to park near Ponte de Santa Clara seems to be the best solution to visit Coimbra's centre.
