Coimbra's 'new' cathedral is up the hill from Se Velha, not far from the university. It was only a euro to enter though there is no guide notes in English and the grumpy attendant didn't offer any help.
The altarpiece is impressive, as are the statues. If you like your 'creepy Jesuses', this could be the place for you. Lots of old relics are on display too.

The cathedral is unimpressive and nothing special.
I can't stand it when there is a suggested donation but a rude lady on the entrance making sure everyone pays it. I would class this as an admission fee!

Another example of a fine church. Loved the cherubs right at the top of the dome. Stand underneath the dome and look up to see them

We walked up the hill from Se Velha de Coimbra on the way passing my saints on the corner of the trail. The outside of the New Cathedral didnt look too impressive. There is a nice white marble statute. On entry you pass into a shop where you have a choice of visit church and cloisters, etc. We opted for church and cloisters. The church is very nice in side with lots and lots of gold everywhere. The walk in the cloisters goes around a nice garden and a monument. It would have been better if it wasnt raining.

This is a classic old cathedral with beautiful interior specializing in lots of old wood and gold leaf. Not to be missed in Coimbra

As you all will know is that the city Coimbra is known as one of the oldest “University Cities” of Europe.
On the same level and as a neighbour from the University of Coimbra you will find the nice
“Sé Nova de Coimbra” which is considered as one of the “National Monuments of Portugal”.
His location is on the “Largo da Feira dos Estudantes”, the outside as well as the inside is in a very good condition and well maintained.
They used some of the Jesuit and some Barock style in the Sé, you will be asked on the entrance to pay one Euro pro person (as donation to help to maintain the Sé Nova).
What you see on the inside is nice and very luxurious as in the most churches in Portugal, but anyhow it was nice to visit.
On the outside for people who like to see some museums you have the “Machado Museum” at 50 meters, some further you can visit the “Library” from the University, you are very close to the park and the “Aqueduct”, and for people who love to walk you are not fare away from the old city centre, wh.ere you can see more nice things as commented in my other reviews on Coimbra. When arriving by car, you can have a problem to find a parking space, so it is better to park in an underground into the old city, near the railway station (End station). And continue by walking tha way up to the University
I hope you will enjoy your visit to Coimbra as much as I. See you on my next review.

Se Nova in Coimbra, Portugal also means the New Cathedral. Even though it say new cathedral but the building actually dates back to the late 16th century and was built by the Jesuit Order.

All cleaned up and sparkling, ready for the Saturday wedding that was taking place. Because of the wedding we could not go inside, but it sure did look spiffy.

Very beautiful church in the university area. Sad that everything was full of cars and it was impossible to take a proper photo.

This wasn't my favorite cathedral that I saw on my trip but it's worth a visit. The architecture and decor is very pretty.
