A monument that you can't see, information that doesn't exist....for us it was just a nice-ish walk. But still don't understand what were we supposed to have seen.

You will find the statue on the outside of the city, the “Cava de Viriato” was a fortress surrounded by water and located to the North of the city of Viseu, and is nominated as National Monument sins 1910. The fortress had an octagonal form and surrounded by walls (Made out of earth). The total area of the fortress was about 8 hectares. Actually they suppose that the fortress should have being built by the Christians in the year X or XI, with the idea to be a new city to substitute the old Viseu, and it became the name of “Viriato a Cava” in the year XVI. Today you can visit the statue built for this fortress in a walking area.…

This is, oddly, one of the most popular monuments in Viseu. Viriato was a shepherd who lead the lusitanians in the resistance against the romans. It is said that he was born / lived in the Viseu area and made his headquarters on the grounds on the place where the Cava is. But it’s just a small statue of him on top of the remainders of an ancient fortification. I understand the historic value of the place, but there’s nothing here. Not worth the detour from the center.…
