After having been to Viseu a few times, I finally went to visit the Sé Cathedral, the most important religious building in the district.
I was expecting to pay to visit it, but as there was no counter at the entrance, I went in, and after the cloisters, which is what you see first, I turned left and entered the Cathedral. I noticed that there was a balcony, but I preferred not to go there, because as I only wanted to see the inside of the temple, that was already my goal.
Built from the 12th and 13th centuries, the interior is interesting, with its Romanesque style. There were other interventions in later times.
There is very little decoration, the altar is beautiful but not extraordinary, it has a loud choir but I didn't see a pipe organ and the areas I liked most ended up being where the baptismal font was and right at the beginning the cloisters. The facade of the building, seen from the outside, is a bit simple.
One note: if you want to visit without paying, don't go to the information desk. There was nothing written at the entrance that you had to pay and the employees didn't come to us.
If you want to visit the sacristy and the Treasury-Museum, then yes, you can go to the information location, and they may charge for the general visit.

The cathedral of the city is simply called Sé — in Portuguese, this word means simply “cathedral". The patron saint of Viseu is the first Portuguese Saint Festonius, who was born in these places. Built in the 12th century on the site of an older church, it was subsequently rebuilt several times. Manueline, Gothic, and Baroque styles are mixed in its architecture. In the 17th century, blue and white azuleju tiles appeared on the walls. It looks quite unusual... azuleju - in the cathedral. Be sure to visit the museum. The price is only 2 euros, but there is something to see, and the views from above are excellent.

This beautiful cathedral sits at the top of a hill in Viseu. It dates back to the 12 th century. There are beautiful azulejo-lined walls in the courtyard.

Mixed styles due to constant improvements/renovations. The area surroundings are also worth the visit ( the Grão Vasco Museum has magnificent works to be seen). Take your time to breath as well.

The Cathedral is a beautifull imponent building - its construction started in the 12th century with the erection of a romanic style church, which was in the following centuries improved and extended. Because of this, it has features from different architecture styles such as gothic, Barroc and "Manuelino" (a unique portuguese style very much influence by Portugal maritime conquests).
The celling in the main altar is specially beautifull. The cathedral has a museum of Holy Art where you can see beautifull art pieces from different periods of Portuguese history. The cathedral has the relic of Saint Teotónio (the 1st Poruguese saint), who died in the 12th century, and played an important role in having Portugal independence recognized by the Pope (which at the time was mandatory for any country to become so).
The entrance to the cathedral is free. The entrance to the museum has a simbolic cost of a few euros - if you enjoy holy art and history, and decide to visit this museum, I believe you will find it money weel spent.
The cathedral stands in a hill and is surrounded by other historic buildings (such as Igreja da Misericórdia or Museu Grão Vasco). You could probably probably spend a morning and afternoon visiting the cathedral and surroundings.

This cathedral is not big as others but has one of the most beautiful interiors I have ever seen. Built on the XII century and then suffering a lot of different architectonic influences throughout the following centuries it's a must see attraction in Viseu

This church is worth a visit if you are in Viseu but not worth a trip to see if your time in Portugal is limited. The facade was more interesting to us than the inside, but we have seen so many beautiful churches in Portugal and found this one not as beautiful, interesting or unique in any way.

Wherever you drive along or you look to the center of any spot from Viseu you see the catedral on the top of the hill. The Se is very old, and has a lot of history, back in the 17 century a lot of paintors and other important figures that markes this epoque where visitors of the region. The convent part on the right of the catedral is in my opinion the most beautiful, with a open patio leting the sun light coming in. I visited a lot of catedrals and churches "you can find hunderts in Portugal" and on all other countries around the world. It's not the TOP of all them all around the world, but it's a kind one.
Worth to stop by for a quick energy fill, the atmosphere is great!

At the magnificent "Adro da Sé", the beautiful square at the historical center of Viseu, stands the "Sé Catedral de Santa Maria de Viseu", a monument to faith and religiosity. Its construction started around the 12th century, following the romanesque and gothic styles, with impressive manueline caractheristcs. The "Sé de Viseu", as it is commonly known, is a medieval cathedral, comprising caractheristics of a church and of a fortress, what makes it quite unique in Northern Portugal. Take your to time to visit this fantastic temple, stroll along the cloisters, admire the gilded baroque altars, the traditional Portuguese blue tiles panels and the 18th century paintings. If you still have some time to spare, visit the religious art museum located at the upper cloisters. Enjoy!

Dear Thomdamo
We visited as tourists, rather than worshippers, so do not have this information.
The Diocese of Viseu has a very good table of information on their website, showing mass schedules for all the churches in the Diocese. A search on google should find this quite easily, try 'liturgy of the diocese of viseu'.
I am not allowed to give you the link under TripAdvisor rules, but it should be easy to find.\
Hope this helps.
