The Cultural Center of Belem was built in 1988, designed by Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Salgado, to host the Portuguese presidency of the EU in 1992. It is a wonderful center, with a lot of different cultural events, exhibition and activities.

Fantastic terrace facing the river with great food (we tried bacalao and pastel de belem). Fast and comfortable!

A fascinating architectural space with a superb (free!) international modern art museum spanning 1900-1990. Browse a stunning collection unhindered by the tourist masses and then relax in the on-site cafes which are largely used by locals.

Been there a few times. Concerts in the evening time, interesting exhibitions, a really nice bookstore (helps if you know Portuguese :), a really good restaurant. If you visit Belem for pastels de Belem / pastels de nata, it sure is worth to go a bit further and visit the CCB also!

Working in Belem I chanced upon the CCB and was blown away by the Mozart/ Salieri concert given by the Portuguese chamber orchestra. Brace and irreverent with sparkling musicianship. Great restaurant for dining solo. Felt very comfortable. Cool vibe and great choice of Italian or Japanese food all made in front of you. I had a beautiful grilled prawn salad... More

This is a huge complex with a free entrance to a Museum of Modern Art. It is very spacious inside with different exhibitions. Go there if you are really interested in the modern art. It is almost across from the Monastery and next to a beautiful park with a nice fountain. There is also a cafeteria on the side from... More

We have visited the excellent modern art collection in the past, but this was our first opportunity to see a show. We caught Eliane Elias in the Grand Auditorium and were very impressed with the venue. Seats are plush. Sight-lines are clean, and acoustics are bright and clear. Easy in and out. We couldn't ask for more.

We really enjoyed wandering around soaking up this excellent modern art collection away from the tour buses and heat. Well set out in a beautifully designed building.

If you like modern art and architecture you will spend some time in this museum. The art collection is very unique and the temporary exhibitions are also worth a visit - and all that for free! The architecture space is on the other side of the otherwise in itself wonderful building. The exhibition there is also great. Entry fee is... More
