I visited it in the evening and the square was very very beatiful. With its lightening white the monuments hit, in particular the frontal side of the sanctuary. Great experience even if i am not religious. I appreciated too the form of the square and its huge height.

The best time to visit this shrine is around the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. All other times are good to visit, but this is simply the best, for me.

A beautiful Cathedral inside and out upon an open expansion for the influx of visitors and thousands of pilgrims. It was amazing to see people on their knees slowly crawling on their knees to the steps of the cathedral. Additional buildings provide more information and viewings. The open expanse of the sky and the little chapel in which to leave a candle burning brings you back to the spirit with in you.

The shrine is very impressive as is the village where the Children lived...in my opinion the Plaza did not feel warm and welcoming.

This shrine is enormous. It is on the scale of St Peter's in Rome. Pilgrims on their knees making pilgrimages. A candle store where you can buy candles and leave them at the location where the shepherd children saw Our Lady. Be careful with the candles!!! The area where you are supposed to set them turned into a fiery cauldron when we were there. Really quite dangerous.

This plaza is huge and very impressive. The best time to visit of course would be during festivals or on a Sunday when you can see just how many people can fit into the square. Everything seems to be bright and clean and positive. The buildings frame the square perfectly and contrast one another in both design and age. I am not a religious person but I really enjoyed visiting this place and found it to be both spiritually and culturally rewarding.

As a practicing Catholic, I am glad I can say I went to Fatima. Both Basilicas on each side of the massive square are impressive, I can only imagine when it is filled with the faithful all praying.
The commercialism at the shrine was very disappointing. The church has a burgeoning business in candle sales, medals, rosaries, etc.. Instead of a quiet, peaceful place it is a steady line of tourists parading past the grotto --- which is a good thing in that there are people still praying and taking the time to come here but way too commercial.
The rest of the "small town" is nothing but hotels, gift shops and restaurants. Not much reason to stay,,,, go on to Porto or back to Lisbon.
If trying to go for a visit (not during one of the major festivals), you can book tour from Lisbon for 40 -50 euros per person for a 1/2 day trip with about 2 1/2 hours on site.

This place cuts through the trappings of materialism like a hot knife. The realities on this eve of October 13, were the hundreds of people, in traffic vests, walking a pilgrimage for days to get here. It is men and women crawling on their knees across the pavers to pay their homage. Lines of ordinary people lighting candles and attending mass in myriad of languages. There is ourselves collecting holy water to take back across the oceans to deliver to our friend with terminal cancer. Faith, it takes all kinds, and forms, but it is tangible and it is present here

What a place. It's hard to imagine the number of people that visit during the pilgrammage. It is massive. We visited on a tour from Lisbon. It was a 1.5 hr drive. This is one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world. People get on their knees and proceed into the shrine with the Virgin Mary. We bought some candles and burned them and said a prayer. We went in both churches. Beautiful place. Definitely a must see!
