This is truly a hidden gem...FREE to get in!! Eventhough it is free, it is artistically played with financial and monetary history with specimens and forms of money. I was ecstatic to see the different currencies with an actual GOLD bar inside the vault. The museum is clean and displayed artistically with wonders of historical finds. Beautiful.

Free is good - a good museum with free entrance is better. The carefully constructed exhibits takes you through the development of money from advanced barter items to the high tech currency of today. Coins and currency can be small pieces of art and are expertly displayed here. Also the section of the production of paper bills demonstrates human ingenuity. If you bring kids, make sure they get their face on a bank note and throw coins in the wishing well. The only negative is the very small cafeteria and that not all exhibits have English translations - most do. We haven’t visited the last few times we have stayed in Lisbon but we will be back in the future.

Wasn't sure what to expect but had a great experience here. Fabulous and incredibly interesting displays and "hands on " activities. My husband and I spent a lot more time here than we expected to - such an original place. The building inside and out is very beautiful - in fact the whole square it is situated in and the area round about has some incredible architecture. Well worth a wander round. Would definitely recommend - a great place to visit and for free ( donation welcome).

Take a converted church with an ancient wall in it's basement and a gold bar you can hold in it's reception...and you have the Money Museum in Lisbon! This museum is only a couple of minutes walk from the Praca do Comercio, and it's free to enter, so there's really no reason not to take a look. Don't be put off by the security scanning as you go in, remember, there is a gold bar in there! The variety of exhibits was good, I especially liked the really old coins, the workmanship was incredible, and the collection of different bank notes which was really interesting. As some other reviewers have said, the staff were all extremely helpful and friendly. Just make sure you follow the plan and don't miss out half of the exhibits (like some of our group did...!!). The museum is spread over a few floors but it does have a lift for those with mobility issues. Highly recommended!

The kids were looking forward to this museum. Not a museum that I would actually go to. I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed it. We got to hold a gold bar. The kids got to make their own bank notes and coins, amongst other activities. They have an amazing coin collection. The security guys on each floor were super helpful and were always giving us info or interacting with the kids. The amazing thing is it’s free.
