A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

We happened to be walking around the streets of the city and we came across this area. It is a rather nice but out of the way kind of spot. It is full of graffiti, some of it quite interesting too. However the most interesting art work we found all over the walls is that which has to do with the local culture, that is fado music. It takes up quite a bit of space on the building walls all around, but it is actually really good.

This stairway is located between Rua da Madalena and Largo Sao Cristovao.
We entered through the archway located along Madalena and climbed to the Largo. Along the way you will encounter the Fado Vadio, a graffiti mural dedicated to Fado style music.
Just prior to reaching the Largo you will see a large plaque dedicated to the saint.
Visit for the mural.
We walked the stairway at night after dinner. Encountered few people in this area.

Why on earth has this marvellous piece of street art been left to deteriorate?! It’s enough to make one weep! I took a look back at the shots I took of this piece of street art in 2013, when it was in its full glory! Sadly, what I saw this morning bore little resemblance to what I saw then. What a sad testament to utter neglect!

Well, where should I start? Mural is falling apart, people spray painting garbage over it and everything else. Human feces left on the steps, the bar next door plays garbage music with NO fado at all. Drunken patrons take up the whole steps leaving trash everywhere. Locals are in distress, littering, rude people, broken glass, not sure what else I can say. Definitely not a place for children and pets to walk through. Being birth place of fado they sure know how to disgrace it!

We were walking in the area and walked down here. This place has some interesting artwork on the side of the buildings which is nice to look at. The area seemed to be reasonably clean and there was someone playing an musical instrument. The architecture of the buildings is nice. This is a nice place to walk down
