We took a day tour of Sintra with Catia and it was the most magical experience. Sintra was beautiful with it's history going back to Roman, Moorish times and the castles will leave you enchanted. It richly deserves it's status as a UNESCO Word heritage site. Catia was the perfect person to tour with as she grew up in the... More

Thank you Catia Luis. We had a great day traveling from Porto to Lisbon. Catia drove us to Lisbon stopping in 3 towns where we got the flavor of Portugal, its history and present day experience. She is very informative and a pleasure to spend the day with her. She was flexible and knows her country. I recommend this for... More

My husband and I spent a delightful day with Catia. It was a combination driving and walking tour, which was perfect for us. Catia took us on a fascinating drive through various neighborhoods of Lisbon. Saw many monuments, the world's oldest bookstore, and the site of the 1506 massacre of Jews - monument memorializing it. Walked in downtown area and... More

Catia, a beautiful young lady, met us at our hotel (Vincci Baxia - very central) and took us on an amazing and informative tour of the streets of Lisbon featuring many colors and styles of ceramic tiles. She also took us to some hidden gems in old buildings and we visited shops that had a huge variety of tile and... More

Catia was a breath of fresh air - very informative, knowledgeable and witty. She's a certified tour guide--this makes a difference folks; it's a rigorous test and certification process requiring thorough knowledge of Portugal and Lisbon's history, government, topography, etc. She took us through four of Lisbon's neighborhoods in a morning tour -- with our teenager (!). We learned not... More

If there is a priority line, you're in it.She knows all the tricks of getting around, where to park, pick you up, where to go. She knows her history.....names, dates everything you want in a guide.... More

This was our first trip to Lisbon. We'd used guides before for trips to Rome and Ireland and liked doing a tour to 'get oriented'. But we wanted a more personalize tour this time, since we brought our teenager and wanted to be sure she'd enjoy learning about the city. Catia was very helpful when I asked about a personalized... We toured with Catia Luis for two days and learned more about Portuguese history than we could have ever hope. We started at the Monastery of Jeronimos. Catia really made the Monastery come alive with her commentary and was able to answer any questions we asked. Of course we had to stop for the famous custard tart, which is worth... More

Our guide Catia Luis was most acommodating in arranging for our desire to visit a fish market in Cascais along with a visit of the surrounding countryside. A wonderful three hour seaside lunch at Restaurant Adraga near Colares gave us four retirees from the USA a chance to learn as much as possible about about life in Portugal from Catia.... More

We decided on a last minute trip to Portugal and after reading the great reviews about Lisbon Stories decided to try and book a tour with Catia. Catia was very quick to respond back to us. Unfortunately she was already booked for the day we had in mind, but was very helpful with suggestions about the itinerary and offered another... More

Thank you so much for your wonderful words. Silvia told me what a pleasure it was to tour with you and share your fascination for gardens and the landscape you admired during that day. Please let us know next time you come to Portugal as hopefully I may be available. Best wishes, Catia More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
