We stayed in an Air BnB for 5 nights in Rua Gremio. It was our first time to Portugal so it was a bit of a stab in the dark but it turned out to be a brilliant location. When we arrived at midday, I thought we might’ve made a mistake but streets that looked quiet and non-descript during the day, seemed to come alive in the evening, transforming from shabby to lively and buzzing by night. There were lots of interesting little bars, some fado places and restaurants almost outside our front door. We loved the cosy Old Pharmacy Wine Bar and we went twice to Valdo Gatti, a popular, upmarket wood-fired pizza place. Despite the lively atmosphere, we didn't find it noisy at night but our apartment was quite large and the bedroom was at the back, away from the street. The one potential drawback is that it’s a very steep hike from the the central shopping and sight-seeing area of Baixa back to Barrio Alto. This won’t suit everybody. If you stay in Barrio Alto, pretty much everywhere you go will be downhill when you set off at the start of the day and a weary climb back uphill at the end of the day. We like to walk everywhere so we didn't mind this although we were beginning to feel like mountain goats by the end of 5 days. We definitely got fitter. Up and down the hills it’s all good. Hop a tram if you get tired and ride around. Great place to shop for excellent Portuguese leathers shoes too! Can't wait until this season in hell is over so I can go back and visit..

I loved this part of the city as it's just so full of life - in fact it's full of everything, like LIsbon in miniature. Close enough to the city centre to walk there if you want to, there is always something to do and see no matter what time of day and night - and perfectly safe for a woman to walk around on her own. Some of the best Fado venues are to be found here - with plenty of cafes and restaurants too. Every corner presents a different picture filled with colour and vibrancy.…
