One of the most beautiful churches in the city was founded in 1147 and rebuilt in 1582 outside the city walls (hence “on the outside” in its name). The church is famous for the world’s largest collection of tiles (more than one hundred thousand tiles are here), but it also offers the great panoramic view from the terrace by the... More

Igreja da Sao Vicente de Fora is one of the finest churches in Portugal. It was constructed at the beginning of the 17th century in a bold Renaissance style. The two tower facade is particularly striking.

Enjoyed a morning walking around the cloister and soaking in the history. Then we made our way to the tower and enjoyed spectacular views of Lisbon

On our way back from the Feira de Ladra and Panteao we could not help passing by this impressive looking church. As seems to be the case with everything in Lisbon it was built on a promontory so from the stairs leading to it you can watch the old trams negotiating with difficulty the narrow street in front of it.... we visited here on a cruise stop in the city. The church is one of many and is worth the climb up from the harbour as it is beautiful inside and sunday mass was just ending as we arrived. A number of steps are required so those with limited mobility may find it tough

We stumbled upon this gorgeous church not really by accident, but we were absolutely amazed by this hidden gem. We were here on the 24th of December, which is a day where most places in Lisbon aren't open, or only operate for half a day. We arrived at the church at 12.55 AM and found that it wouldn't receive any... More

Great view from upstrais (Douwn Lisbon and tajo river) Historical. The temple is very simple, without any luxury.

I would skip the church and just go to the cloisters. There's an entry fee (I think 5 euro), and you can go see some of the history of the church, as well as access the tombs to the last royal ruling family of Portugal - the house of Braganza. That was really the only reason I went. If you... More

While here make sure to visit the monastery right next door and visit the room with all the tombs of the Braganca Portuguese royal family.

We went in there because the net was adamant that there was an ivory Jesus in there... but we found none. Still, the church is lovely, it's fresh and nice for a little wander or prayer.

Staying in Graca & Sao Vicente

Neighbourhood Profile
Graca & Sao Vicente
You can be thankful that most common travel guides don't mention Graça and São Vicente that often. Part of Lisbon's historic center and "Old Town", they feel like independent villages in the capital's center, and more untouched than Alfama. Amazing views, restaurants and parks, as well as important monuments like the S. Vicente Church and the National Pantheon, make this a spectacular option for those looking for a more tranquil walk-around in the center of Lisbon. Graça has been the choice of many younger people over the past years, both nationals and expats, given the cozy feeling of the neighborhood and its hidden secrets.
