- Alecia91401Los Angeles, California53 contributionsGreat little zoo in LisbonThis is a lovely zoo to visit. The zoo and exhibits are nicely styled and the animals seem to have a decent amount of room to move around. I was here on a Sunday afternoon and there weren't a lot of people, which was great. Lots of animals I've never seen before and learned a lot. Definitely recommend this place, especially if you have kids. Easily accessible by metro tooVisited September 2023Travelled soloWritten October 6, 2023
- Nicola_W_0108United Kingdom859 contributionsAmazing up-close animal encounters; one of the best zoos we’ve been to!Visited the zoo on our anniversary in October during our holiday to Portugal. It was a little challenging to find the main entrance at first because there was construction work going on. When we did get in, we were impressed with the look of the site and benefited from a discount with our Lisbon cards. Enjoyed that the zoo wasn’t busy either, so the atmosphere during the day was nice and peaceful. The cable car was a very unique experience - soaring past the scenery and some of the animal enclosures high up in the air. We’d never seen anything like that before and would recommend for people to do this as something exciting & different! The animals were great, we were so lucky to see so many of them up close and had many highlights from our visit. In particular, it was very special to see the giraffes, elephants and big cats at such close range. The dolphin show was amazing, we were in awe throughout! Trainers seemed great and the dolphins appeared to enjoy what they were doing, putting on an incredible display. All of these experiences made our anniversary extra special and we would love to return when in Lisbon again! An improvement I would suggest is the zoo having information by enclosures to identify the individual animals present with names, markings, their backgrounds etc. Would have also liked a greater range of merchandise to purchase in the gift shop. The on-site McDonald’s was also very good - friendly staff, easy ordering and clean!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 4, 2023
- soviet8202 contributionsDolphin 🐬 show is amazing 🤩While I am not entirely sure that Dolphins 🐬 should be performing for humans in the first place the show at the zoo is amazing well worth a watch and they seem to enjoy performing and put on an incredible show. The zoo is well presented and well stocked with a cable car 🚠 traveling around so you can aerial view the animals with No walking if you are lazy . We enjoyed a pleasant stroll around and lunch at on site Mac Donald. It is relatively expensive @€29 per adult however the animals have to be taken care of fed etc so probably justified price.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten January 19, 2024
- LorraineSaskatoonSaskatoon, Canada26 contributionsAn enjoyable MorningThis was a clean green zoo! There is a huge variety of animals that looked healthy and happy. There was a large number of staff feeding and cleaning pens and lots of maintenance projects under way. $20 euros for seniors! Excellent value and a Metro stop and McDonald’s just outside the main door!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 27, 2024
- Steve CRickmansworth, United Kingdom34 contributionsTruly BrillantWe have been to many zoos at home (UK) and in other countries. This really is one of the best. The enclosures are all of a good size and the animals all look healthy and happy. Lots of information around to explain about the animals and there lives. As with everything in Lisbon there are hills to walk up but this just adds to the interesting views etc that you can get. Kids of ages big and small will love it.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten April 11, 2024
- edsriPortishead, United Kingdom98 contributionsWorth a few hours to see a lot of animals and birdsThere is a lot to see in the zoo, from big to small animals. Iberian lynx was out, red panda was very close. A lot of different birds to see. Can’t comment on cafe, but drinks machines around the site and ice-cream was fair price. As to the enclosures, I’m not an expert. Some looked a bit small, and birds always seem to deserve more room. If conservation work is being done, the justification is greater. There’s a lot of tree cover if it’s sunny, lots of seats, picnic area.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten April 16, 2024

- Companion472206918375 contributionsLovely experienceThis zoo is just brilliant. At first, the entrance fee of nearly 30 euros seemed a bit high but we got much more than we had expected - a gorgeous ride in a cable car over the whole zoo, absolutely amazing dolphin show and even a performance with parrots and some more very surprising animals which I don´t want to reveal in order not to spoil the surprise. Seeing some not so common species like white rhinos, orang-utans or koala bears was great. We spent a whole afternoon there and enjoyed every minute of it!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten June 21, 2024
- Dingbat1982Midsomer Norton, United Kingdom670 contributionsBrilliant zoo - dolphin show, bears, tigers, etcAmazing zoo, we had such a lovely day. Visited with two children aged 7 and 10 and they both loved it. We travelled there from our hotel via metro, which was really easy and the stop is directly outside the zoo. We didn't buy our tickets in advance and it was easy to buy the tickets when we got to the zoo using a machine. Queue was short to get in. They stamp your hand with a UV stamp so you can leave and re-enter, but it comes off easily, so beware. My daughters came off, but they didn't question it as obviously she was with us and we all had stamps. Lots of animals to see and the chair lifts are amazing for fab views of the city and animals. Train was good and not expensive (this was the only attraction you had to pay extra for on top of your tickets). Chair lift was free. McDonalds and Lidl right next to the zoo. Dolphin show was great, we watched it twice. Would really recommend for a great day out.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 9, 2024

Do NOT waste your money going here during the winter months, as a matter of fact, for all intended purposes, it should be closed. It’s very expensive to get in at 22.50 euros per ticket to walk around looking at unattended dirty poorly maintained displays with no animals in them, sad but true. At the gate we were told that there wasn’t any dolphins, what they should have done is given us updated list of what was there as we would have rather spent our money differently. Very upsetting to say the least. The one thing that was good, to give credit where credit is due, was the short but amusing tropical bird show, that on its own was amazing to see.

The visit to the zoo turned out to be a big disappointment because when we arrived at the zoo around 16:30 we were informed that the cable car was no longer working at that time. This would not be a major problem. However, when we went in and went to see the chimpanzees, they were already in their cages because the staff was almost finished with the work day and for safety reasons, which are naturally perceived, the animals are collected in their cages. The location of the elephants were under construction and as such were not accessible, the lions were also unable to see them, as many other spaces are in conservation / repair works. All these works and schedules of the staff make sense, however I ask: do they have all these spaces of being suffering works at the same time? Could it be that due to so many constraints the price, which is not at all economical, could not be reduced? It is the note that I hope to be constructive so that those entitled to rethink that we cannot / should continue to charge the same price when the "final product" is far below what was announced and its normal functioning.

Zoos are places to promote environmental education about wildlife, not a business. This zoo has a large list of sponsors but charge too much to access. In addition to their old and small facilities, the price is unaffordable for many people. I am an expert in these facilities and I have visited lots of Zoos around the world. I do not recommend it.

Due to the work around the zoo we had a lot of trouble finding a place and we had to walk a lot. However, I absolutely recommend it, it's a zoo like in a tropical forest with all the animals like we loved seeing in zoos before, the price is worth it, just the delphinium show at 2:30 p.m., you shouldn't miss it half an hour of spectacle and magnificent choreography, of complicity between the dolphins and their trainers: there were hundreds of children spectators, it was a treat to see them rejoicing: it is one of my favorites beautiful shows. You shouldn't miss it because soon this kind of show will be banned. The zoo is very clean and well presented and we can even use a cable car which takes us around the zoo for 20 minutes above the treetops. Allow a good half day to see everything

The zoo is beautifully kept with many varieties of animals. The zoo is very much a nod to a classic Victorian garden. Exhibits are spacious and you can get a good view of the animals; there is a nice compromise between this and animal privacy/shelter. Access with a pram is not easy in all areas unless you’re willing to carry it up steps.
Toilet facilities clean and tidy but do need more baby change areas.
Dining area is located outside the zoo (you need a stamp on your hand for re-entry) and my one and only criticism is that there are not even close to being enough tables for the capacity the zoo can hold. The food is quite expensive too, even for Lisbon.
The aerial cable cars over the zoo are a great feature and give another perspective to viewing the animals.
Managed to see the dolphins but the show was closed due to covid.
Would definitely recommend Lisbon zoo!

I enjoyed this zoo because many of the social animals here were able to live together. It is quite large, I got lost a few times! They seemed happy in the company of their own kind. I did not observe any stereotypic behavior here (pacing and repetitive movements), which makes me feel they are doing a better job at keeping these animals stimulated and satisfied (of course being free would be much better!) The areas seemed clean. There was one stork in a cage by him/herself next to the walkway. This stork would walk next to every visitor inside his/her cage, seemingly very lonely. This made me sad.
There are ample bathrooms, drink stands and food opportunities throughout the zoo.

My daughter and I absolutely loved our visit here. So many animals to see, lots of beautiful photo opportunities. We were very blessed with warm weather when we went on the 11th January, this added to our enjoyment. Lots of animals basking in the sun so made taking photos easier! The signage coupled with the map handed out on entry made finding everything really easy. It's an incredibly large zoo and even though there were lots of people we were never in a crowd, seeing everything was as if we were the only ones there. I can imagine in the height of summer, it would be a very different story.
We enjoyed reading all the info on all the enclosures and how vulnerable a lot of the species are. Makes you realise just how precious they are.
We arrived just after opening at 10am and made sure we visited the dolphin show at 11. It was magnificent. The keepers clearly love the animals and you can see the bond between them.
We stayed until about 2pm then left to have lunch before leaving the zoo. We had a great time.

It’s very large with a lot of different types of animals. There was a lot of walking because the place was large, but it was worth the walk. The one thing I will say is there’s not clear path to go within the zoo to see everything. This zoo was sort of all over and we had to walk around to try see everything and we still missed stuff. We really want to see a dolphins show unfortunately was not on that day, but still a lot of fun and a nice afternoon.

Hollymolly, 22.50euro 1 person?.. why not have it cheaper to get more people and therefor more money? Is the zoo only for rich people? On top of that, I felt sorry for some big animals in small cages. The zoo should cover with trees, or similar, the view of the elephants area as it's not nice buildings as background.
The cable car was not working, the dolphin show was not on, ... again, 22.50euros? No wonder it was nearly empty.

We went to the zoo despite changeable weather and did not regret the visit. It is in my opinion a very good value for money. For 76 EUR ( 2 adults plus child) we could visit the zoo, see the dolphin show there, take the gondola lift over the enclosures in the zoo itself and see the bird show. The train through the zoo was unfortunately out of operation that day, but was not a problem. Because the zoo can be run great even with smaller children. There are many different animal species : Lions , tigers, elephants, koalas, rhinoceros, hippo, zebra, giraffe, reptiles, birds, cheetah , many different monkey species, .... The enclosures were partly really small, but very clean and very well maintained. Thus, the zoo was not so huge in terms of area and still showed so many animals.
The only drawback for us was that the open restaurants were behind the exit of the zoo, possibly it was due to the weather that only ice cream stands and beverage stands were open in the zoo.
Conclusion:
It was a beautiful day with many unforgettable impressions. We will definitely come back.

I'm a huge fan of Bongos (the animal) and it has forever been my dream to have an up-close and personal encounter with them (behind the scenes if you will) and I was wondering if anything like that is available at Lisbon Zoo? The closest thing I could find on their website was the 'Wild Saturdays' tour with a zoo keeper, but it didn't mention if Bongos were included!
