This was a big surprise. The Portuguese Military Museum is very well situated near the main thoroughfare that connects Lisbon with the Santa Apolonia train station. Interesting museum with an original exhibition of weapons . Valuable medieval, renaissance and contemporary exhibits . The works on display are excellent and illustrate the different historical periods and history of Portugal. The building is palatial with numerous paintings, azulejos, polychrome, etc. It tells also the story of Portugal through paintings and tiles. It was a great experience. Sunday entry is free until 2 p.m. I recommend visiting.…

This is easily the most unexpectedly great museum experience I've ever had. It's a fairly short walk from downtown, the entrance is on the west side of the building (don't go into the recruiting office, as I almost did!). There's a tiny reception desk with a helpful lady to take the massive sum of three euros(!!). Every time I turned a corner, there was another room, with yet more stuff. Not only are there more cannons than you can shake a stick at, but rooms dedicated to various different conflicts, all pretty interestingly displayed. Keep exploring and you'll find EVERYTHING from intricately decorated ceilings, to a courtyard lined with tiles showing important battles and yet more cannons, to a room full of caricatured figurines showing the history of army uniforms, to ... you name it, if it's remotely linked to military history, its here. At one point I was reduced to just wandering round with my mouth hanging open - utterly blown away.…

Each room is beautiful with magnificent displays of Portuguese military history. Take you time and enjoy. The price for entrance was very reasonable €1 for a senior (65+) an €3 for adults.…

This museum contains what must be the finest collection of ancient howitzers, cannon and guns anywhere. There are also many exhibits relating to Portuguese military expeditions and their commanders. The model room was fascinating. The details of the miniature guns and even the complete farriers and carpenters equipment sets are exquisite. If you visit the museum, do not forget to look up; the ceilings are spectacular.…
