I stayed just a few metres away from this place and so walked past it multiple times each day. Although there isn't an awful lot to see (the museum is very small) what there is is definately worthwhile as an introduction to Fado - I tend to think of it in some ways as Flamanco but without the dancing, at least in concept if not expression. The listening booths are worth taking your time over - there are many different artists to listen to and many of their CD's are for sale in the attached shop.

Museu do Fado is a place you can easily love. It contains the heart and soul of Portugal's peculiar brand of music, the fado. It shows the development and evolution of this type of music which defines the local people. There are films, audiovisual presentations, multiple objects, and much more. It is one of the things you shouldn't miss.

There is little in the way of actual relics/items in this museum - with the focus being primarily the audio guide. It was educational, but, we did not walk away feeling we had learnt any more than a cursory Google search would inform us on the topic of Fado.

I only learned about Fado after arriving in Lisbon and had since developed a huge interest in it. Stumble upon Fado Museum one Sunday at the end of a street while wondering through Alfama -an engaging Morrish old town east of Lisbon where little Ginjinha bars hidden away in small laneways, tiny cafes with only 2/3 small tables out the back, front or the side. What a pleasant surprise! The layout of the museum on 3/4 levels was very clever. You don't waste too much energy walking from A to B. They all close by, and with great soundproof systems. I especially love the studio room on 3th floor. Videos of live performance played on a big screen, you could pick and change songs, different Fado singers, choose songs from different eras... The museum wasn't busy at all, only very few of us there. The front desk clerk was cold, indifferent. The lady in the CD shop was very knowledgeable and was great help. A great little hide-away/corner for music lovers
