The church appears small from the outside, but it is quite big on the inside. Its interior architecture is stunning. Aside from its beauty, the Church has a dark history. The church was responsible for the massacre of thousands of innocent Jews in 1506 - there is a memorial infront of the church, which is worth viewing. Also, the church... More

This small church is fairly ordinary from the outside but it is beautiful when you get inside and worth a visit

This is my favorite church in the Lisbon and among all the churches I had visited in both Spain and Portugal, not because it was the most beautiful or it was the grandest, but because I felt more than anywhere else what a church is to the worshipers. Sao Domingo is situated in the bustling center of Rossio. Yet, as... More

We have been lucky enough to have visited Lisbon on a number of previous times but this is the first time we have visited this church and hopefully it will not be the last. From the outside it appears to be quite normal but upon entering it is, with all due respect, a wow! It looks like a former ruin... More

Look at the memorial to the Jewish people massacred outside this church. That memorial is in front of the church. That massacre of thousands of innocent people at Easter time 1506 arose out of events in the church. Then go inside the church and REFLECT...

We were attracted to this church initially by the attractive portico and we were very glad that we ventured in. Another little oasis in the middle of a busy city, providing a welcome time of peace and contemplation.

This beautiful church has known royalty and fire, majesty and earthquake, weddings and death. It has managed to preserve its dignity and a special aura.

This church partially survived the earthquake in the 1700's and you can see what was redone as most of the walls don't match the rest of the church. Great place to visit as it was where the Portuguese royal families were married.

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
