The area
Neighbourhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

This manicured and formal park is directly opposite the Jeronimos Monastery. We walked through it to reach the Discoveries Monument. Designed for the Portugese World Exposition of 1940, it was designed to impress. A series of paths run in increasingly smaller squares, until they converge on a large fountain which is the centrepiece of the park. However I was more taken by the pair of beautiful white hippocampus, sculptures as we left the park. Half-horse, half-fish, they are standing on an elevated pedestal, rearing over a long reflection pool. In Greek mythology, these mythical creatures pulled Poseidon’s chariot. When you are God of the Oceans, how else would you get to and from your underwater palace at Atlantis?

Empire Square is located in the charming Belém district. A beautiful garden with a wonderful fountain, surrounded by the most important monuments of the Portuguese capital - the Monastery of Jeronimos , Belem Palace, Belem Cultural Center, Belem Tower, Padrao dos Descobrimentos. It is a square and is the largest square in the Iberian Peninsula, with a side of about 280 meters. The square was built on the occasion of the Great World Exhibition of Portugal in 1940. A great place to unwind after visiting one of these nearby must-see places in Lisbon.

This is the landscaped area that one passes by to get from Mosteiro dos Jeronimos to Padrao dos Descobrimentos. There is a fountain but at the time we visited, the water was not running and all we saw were just pipes. It was better than nothing but there wasn't anything of significance that one would want to pause and admire.

The largest square in the entire Iberian peninsula is mostly occupied by a vast quadrangular garden with avenues, hedges and flowerbeds that follow a precise schematic and regular design that develops around the large central fountain. There are not many trees (mostly cypresses and/or concentrated on the eastern side), it can be considered a large open green space. At the end of the southern side, two large sculptures of pairs of horses placed at the corners act as the ends of a long series of basins; in the alleys nearby, at regular intervals, there are the coats of arms of the main cities of Portugal created with the mosaic technique, using stone cubes of different colours. Again with the use of light and dark inlays (a very common system in Lisbon), large "drawings" were created in the flooring of large square spaces that meet in the center of the southern, eastern and western sides. Numerous benches, even of particular shapes, scattered among the flowerbeds. The garden is open towards the Tagus (on the southern side), from which it is separated by Av.Brasilia, beyond which is the square of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos and the tourist dock "Doca de Belém"; on the eastern side it is contiguous with another vast green area: the Jardim Vasco da Gama; on the northern side there is the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos with the nineteenth-century neo-Manueline building of the archeology museum next to it; on the western side there are pavilions which probably date back to 1940, when, at the same time as the construction of the square, the Exposção do Mundo Portoguês was set up. I found the garden clean and well-kept, very popular, even by tourists, due to the proximity of the monastery, one of the most famous attractions in the city. It certainly contributes to enhancing this area of Belem, where many attractions are concentrated in an overall limited area, as well as lots of greenery (and the river nearby).

I have been to this square many times over the years. It is one of the most beautiful squares in Lisbon and, probably, one of the most beautiful in Europe.
It has a large garden, shaded by a group of bushes and trees, as well as a teaching garden, which aims to provide a small informative contribution about some native plants.
With a circular lake in the center, flanked by a rectangular one, both allow many species of birds to quench their thirst, including ducks that live here.
The facade of Jerónimos ends up reflected, during the night, in the central lake, creating a beautiful picture that some photos allow you to witness. On the right, for those in front of the Monument to the Discoveries, you can see a more contemporary style: the Berardo museum.

This garden makes for a pleasant stroll between Belem’s big hitting attractions. There is a fascinating little corner, easily missed, where 25 plant species found in the monastery carvings and artwork are being grown, with explanation boards. The garden is well maintained and the central fountain and large pond at the main road side are both very nice.

The Jardim da Praca do Imperio or Gardens of the Empire Square is a public square and park just opposite the Jerónimos Monastery. Aside from all the tourist attractions around the square and area, the gardens are very classical and regular like an Italian gardens. Although the gardens are peaceful and pleasant, it feels like there's a dearth of flower and other plants to make it really pretty. Inside the gardens is an impressive fountain that illuminated at night, and two beautiful Hippocamp statues.

During our tourist walk from the Belem tower we ended up here. The fountains and gardens are very pretty and even tranquil. We sat and enjoyed the beauty.

Great set of gardens that are clean and well maintained. There are hedge mazes and a grand fountain in the center that pulses up and down regularly. Reflecting pools frame the corners and sculptures dot the landscaping. Perfect for a stroll with your loved one(s).

Well appointed and maintained plaza, green and with some water works, worth walking around to take few photos, especially with a monastery in the background. It’s a favorite spot for a lunch break too.
