Small museum but full of displays which are well presented and nicely lit. Most exhibits have explanations in English. A history of the Portugese Military, with weaponry, vehicles, uniforms, maps etc. More interesting than we expected and entry was only E1 pp. Not a “must see” but worth going in for an hour if you are in or close to Largo do Carmo…

We stopped to visit this museum after hearing about it on a walking tour. It’s only 2 Euro to get in and definitely worth it. The building has great historical significance and the story of the Guard is interesting. Some interesting videos and exhibits. We spent an interesting 45 mins or so there.…

On our way to the Museu Arqueológico do Carmo, we passed the Guarda Nacional Republicana and went in because it was for free on this day. We are not really interested in military stuff, but for those who are this museum had a nice display of history, with uniforms, guns, recreating little scenes that marked important events and you could walk around the building, where members of the guard kept a friendly eye on everyone. The 3rd Sunday of every month you can view the changing of the guard at 11 am. While this is not the changing of the guard as in London it is an event not to be missed. Horses, guards and even dogs. While riding on horseback the riders are playing their instruments (even drums) cant say I have ever seen that before. After the event in front of the museum there is a dressage event in the Vasco da Gama park just down the road. Do not miss this if in Belem on the 3rd Sunday of the month. WOW.…
