We were keen to visit the Quinta da Regaleira grounds in Sintra, and had heard of the Initiation Well without knowing much about it. It really is a totally unique experience. From the gardens entrance, use upwards paths until you see a small sign leading...More

Dangerous wet stairs! Initiation well is a mystical place but it is also very dangerous! There are lots of people who go down the stairs which are narrow and it is also quite dark. There was no one there to check how many people could...More

There were no brochures of the property available so I had to ask a guide how to find the well after we had explored most of the grounds. A sense of anticipation prevailed and we were not disappointed. Go early in off-season as we did...More

My favorite spot in Sintra, both mysterious and chilling. Walking trough a system of tunnels underneath the entire park of Quinta da Regaleira with many Masonic symbols imprinted in the structure and wondering why were these built and what exactly were they used for is...More

A must do if you visit the Quinta! The stairs are quite steep when going down so be mindful. If you have mobility issues, probably not a good choice. Once you get to the bottom of the well you'll be able to admire all of...More

Such an odd place. Make you feel like you are joining the Masons or some other cult as you wander down the stairs. Certainly not to be missed when exploring the grounds at the Quinta da Regaleira. Not accessible for the less mobile.

I obviously walked the opposite way when I walked around the Quinta da Regaleira (though there probably was a map) but eventually I found the initiation well from the bottom and could not walk up the stairs. Went to the top and walked down. AMAZING

et there early to avoid the crowds... You can walk down to the bottom of the well, I wonder how the built it! Never seen anything like it. It does get busy though. Magical experience.

This was very unique and definitely worthwhile. It’s a little tricky to find because the signs directing you to it stop and, if it weren’t for the line of people waiting to go inside, I would’ve walked right past. The entrance is just a gap...More

I really enjoyed my brief visit to the Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal. It was surreal the detail and uniqueness of this structure. I can't imagine how it was made or the time put into building it. My only gripe was...More

It surely depends on the season. We were there in the morning & it wasn’t crowded, at noon there were quite a lot of people. The positive thing is that the whole place is so big that it does not actually matter whether there... More
