The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

This is the place for any person who loves history. It was built by the Moors in the 8th/9th centuries. The sight for as old as it is was pretty much intact. It is not for the faint of heart. Walking is hard and the...More

This hilltop fortification was romantically renovated in the 19th century. It is certainly worth a visit and the entrance is reached by bus or tuk-tuk from Sintra. Sintra itself becomes horrendously crowded in the summer months but most tourists are headed for the palaces. You'll...More

We did the walking tour up the hill which took us approximately 45 minutes. It was very lush and beautiful and escaped the massive crowds. We went to the information office and they gave us a walking map and pointed us in the right direction...More

Our visit to the Castle of the Moors was really a bit of a mixed affair. The castle itself is very interesting and very picturesque, and there are superb views for miles around, well worth the modest entrance fee. Be aware though that it is...More

A fantastic place to visit both in terms of its history and the views you get out over Sintra and the hills beyond.

We did the Hop On Hop Off Bus in Sintra and this was our last stop. We had a very scenic uphill hike through a mostly shady path with interesting rock formations up to the ramparts of the castle. Hiking up to the top wasn't...More

Well done to the people of Portugal for seeing the value of this amazing historic site over 150 years ago, and for the more recent restoration and preservation of the castle. We did this tour in conjunction with the nearby royal palace, Palacio de Pena....More

Due to the one-way road up past the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace, the tourist traffic runs counter-clockwise from the town, a long way up to the Moorish Castle followed soon by Pena Palace at the top, then back down into... More

I will be visiting Sintra and will be staying approximately 30 in Lisbon (by taxi). Can anyone please tell me if taking a taxi is a good idea? Also, any detailed information about the best way to navigate to Pena place park, Castle of the Moors and Quinta da Regaleira. Any tips are welcome. THANKS!

Various tour companies will take you there and then to Pena Palace in Sintra. I am not sure if you can reserve a guide on its website though.
