Very dark and drab when compared to so many other local churches. Frequently not open until after 3pm. Has a few beggars situated at the front. There isn’t a charge. We spent about 10 to 15 mins inside. The outside architecture is more interesting.

The three altars and side chapels are really beautiful. There is also a brilliant sounding one year old organ. The cathedral is only open either side of Masses but at that time the professional lighting is switched on especially for photographs.

It’s not always open so if you get the chance of an open door, you won’t be disappointed to visit here. The interior is very beautiful and there are lots of things to see. Inspiring.

Visit in the morning or late afternoon. Around lunchtime it is closed. Rich on the inside. Nice to see and visit. Of course free. Parking is a bit difficult but a few hundred meters away is a parking garage by La Vie shopping center.

make sure you look up and admire the amazing ceiling. Use a guide book to find out about the various altars and make sure you look at the exterior, especially the rear of the tower as the architecture is amazing.

We have been to Funchal four times and each time the Cathedral Se is closed. It is however worth a walk to as the area around is great for street restaurants.

Visit the cathedral at Funchal - beautiful inside, but closed between 12 and 3 p.m each day and not open to visitors during services.
