We visited the gardens in the middle of February and could not believe the variety and colour of the flowers - and plants. We were, perhaps, lucky in that the weather was warm and sunny - and that the cable car was working for the first time in months (closed previously due to the fire in the valley). Whatever our... Beautiful gardens. Makes an excellent half day excursion, more if combined with other things to do in Monte. Once you've got up the hillside it's better to do it all in the one day as the teleferico is quite expensive.

Easily accessible by bus, takes an hour and a half to walk around and absorb. Lots of interesting areas to explore. Cafe is small but adequate with great views over Funchal. The frogs in the adjacent ponds we're very loud and kept visitors well entertained. Museum is a bit gruesome with its pickled specimens!

we have visited the place after having already visited the Tropical garden in Monte - making the comparison obvious and unfavourable against the Botanical garden that is shabbier and not so well kept as the latter than.On the other hand the entrance fee is half making it still worthy to visit primarily thanks to nice view of the city. During... More

It's a shame to be negative but this place let's itself down. We loved it! We had three very happy, enjoyable hours wandering its many paths looking at some marvellous plants. The views from the garden are exquisite. So what let it down? 1 We really hoped we could put a name to the fabulous plants we were seeing in... More

We went here last week, got the bus up from Funchal, the gardens were very interesting and there were many lovely views down to Funchal. Unfortunatly the cable car ride is out of order at the moment so that cut our visit a bit . If you visit on the bus, the stop for going back down is 20 yards... More

The botanic gardens are a short albeit exciting (fast drive in a bus around narrow winding and climbing roads) well drives public bus ride away. The gardens are splendid even in February they are visually excellent and provide wonderful scents to delight.

After making our way there, it was disappointing that so much was closed, but they happily charged the same. But it is very interesting and good for the thighs. You have to admire the taxidermy - precious.

Having the morning free before our return flight home we decided to visit the Botanical Gardens and what a pleasure it turned out to be. The gardens are very well maintained and the variety of plants is amazing - and all in a wonderful setting. There is a good café on the site offering a wide range of eats and... More

There were very few plants that we labeled. The trees and palms had their names but thats about all. The orchid gardens were lovely but again no names on the individual orchids. There were lots and lots of steps and steep slopes which made it very difficult to get around. Had we known this beforehand we would not have gone... More
