The recent fires reached the edge of this garden and have closed the cable car - but go and support them. It's easily reached by no 31 and 31a bus - stop just down from the front entrance to the market. There are great views of Funchal and lovely tropical plants and palms to enjoy. The cafe is the only... More

The cable car ride was great with good views over the harbour. Monte has enough o offer for a half day visit. There's a nice church and botanical gardens.  We decided not to bother with the toboggan.  As one would expect in a botanical garden there is a wide range of interesting and varied plants to be seen, In some... Best way to get there is by Cable Car to Monte - walk 100 metres and get the other Cable Car to the Gardens. Worth every penny just for the ride and the entry ticket for the Gardens is very low [as opposed to the Monte Palace Gardens which is way too high]. The layout of the Botanical Gardens is... More

Some spectacular views over the island, really nice little garden where you can get a coffee while you look over the sea. Access can be via the cable cars or as we did, a taxi which can tailor a wee tour for you at a very reasonable price.

I would have liked to have spent longer in this interesting place. I was with a group and forced to go around with them, but I feel that we did not see all there was. What we did see was very interesting, and even in November there were some lovely flowers to see, and other interesting plants, plus a view... More

I took the No 31 Bus from central Funchal to the Botanic Gardens. I entered for 5.60 Euros being a pensioner. The devastating wildfires of August 2016 have wrought havoc with the fringe of the gardens adjacent to the ravine and 'Lovers Cave' is closed. The gardens are still worth visiting and the views are splendid. There is an excellent... More

Due to the fires the cable car from Monte is not in use and the walk is closed. Nowhere is this noted so we had to find out the hard way. When we got to the gardens we were most unimpressed. Though we appreciate that they are working to rectify the fire damage the rest of the gardens are somewhat... More

Making great attempts to recover from fire damage, but we were very disappointed by the lack of information. There were no guides available and labelling of the plants was extremely haphazard.

Although the Botanical Gardens suffered badly, earlier this year, in the 2 day fire which engulfed parts of Madeira, they are still well worth visiting. A lot of work has been done and is ongoing to to restore the gardens to their former glory. Some of the views from the gardens are quite spectacular, in particular it is very pleasant to... More

If you like plants and flowers you should go and see the botanical garden. You can spend many hours in there. A lot of places to see and visit. Thousands of different plants. Nice to take pictures. Just the very poor birds in small cages are very negative. I was really sad after seeing it. We should try to talk... More
