The gardens are not dramatic or stunning, but they are very beautiful with some good views and a lovely atmosphere. You can get around in a reasonable amount of time and there is a nice cafe if you wish to stop. There are a couple of areas which don't match up with the large plans set out on boards, but... More

Some lovely trees, plants and flowers. Got the 31 bus from Funchal. Warning - the bus seemed to depart Funchal at slightly different time than our timetable indicated. Garden has lots of steep slopes so difficult if limited mobility. Unexciting display of artefacts in Natural History museum. Sadly garden has been singed along one side by the fire though lots... We were a bit disappointed, but that might be because we had visited the tropical garden first. This was a nice garden, but certainly cannot compete with the beauty of the tropical garden in Monte.

Super collection of plants in beautifully laid out gardens. Look for the frogs in the pond, if you can't see them you will certainly hear them. A great way to spend an hour or two.

Once we found the entrance an enjoyable 4 hours spent wandering the gardens. Great views, wide variety of plans. House disappointing displays of local animals, birds and fish at least 50 years behind UK

Thank goodness the terrible fire of 2016 only touched the eve of this fantastic garden. Beware though that the cable car down from Monte was still being repaired in February 2017 and it looks as if it will be out of operation for some months to come. No matter when one visits, there is always lots to see and plenty... More

I think this attraction will be much improved when the cable car is working again. This will mean it is much easier and cheaper to travel to Monte and the tropical gardens. The gardens are lovely, even in February, the cafe serves delicious food and the shrub carpet is wonderful. The small museum has the worst selection of taxidermy I... More

Took the bus into town then the bus up to the gardens. Everyone very helpful with buses, and the gardens were a delight. Be prepared of course for some uphill walking!

A great place to visit for a few hours. Excellent views from the cafe and a variety of gardens to visit. The aviary was sadly closed when we visited.

Loved the quiet wander through the gardens in early February. Lots of plants in bloom. Thankfully a café at the bottom of the garden to refuel ready for the walk back. Could do with some more small maps on display so one knows where one is but over all a nice garden.
